If you love smoky, charred meats, South & East is your next must-visit!
They’ve just opened at NUS Shaw Foundation Alumni House and are pretty wallet friendly, which makes it the perfect spot for a casual dinner.
Cosy Interior 
Though it’s a little out of the way, the vibes definitely make up for the travel out here!
The store is dimly lit in warm lighting, evoking the comforting essence of a smokehouse.
There were many rustic elements, including the terracotta tiles and rattan accents all around, creating a relaxed and cosy environment.
South & East Menu
There’s a wide range of dishes available, many of which are signatures from their time as a home-based business.
The menu spans from charcoal-grilled mains to rice bowls and sharing plates, with a twist of Southeast Asian flavours.
Highlights include the BBQ Wagyu Beef Skewers With Marmite Glaze and Spring Onion ($14), and the Rojak Chicken Wings ($9).
Our meal kicked off with the sides and vegetables, which turned out a lot tastier than they looked.
The Roasted Ebi Potato Salad ($10) wasn’t particularly memorable and we preferred the Smoked Cauliflower with Braised Corn Sauce ($18) which had more flavour.
Our favourite was definitely the Grilled Cabbage with Kaffir Lime Sauce ($15), which was tangy and refreshing.
The cabbage was also grilled well, giving it a soft yet slightly crunchy texture that was further elevated by the crisp kale!
The BBQ Claypot Laksa Rice With Seafood ($28) had a nice smokiness and strong grilled prawn taste!
The sauce was served on the side, so those who prefer a stronger flavour can add more sauce accordingly.
The Five Spice Smoked Beef Short Ribs ($67) is their signature and for good reason. Smoked for up to 10 hours, this was rich and tender.
It went really well with the sauce, and the pickled cucumber added a nice touch of freshness to balance it all out.
The Grilled Fish Fillet With Spiced Coconut Sauce ($28) was a comforting and nostalgic dish.
The sauce was rich and creamy, and went well with the soft texture of the fish.
We ended the meal with the Pulut Hitam Cake with Jackfruit and Coconut Dip ($8), which had a texture similar to that of a brownie.
We were pleasantly surprised by the bold flavour. It was unmistakably Pulut Hitam, but with a smoky flavour.
The coconut dip added a soft, milky contrast, though it was yummy enough even without it. Two pieces definitely weren’t enough!

New Restaurant In NUS
Overall, we really enjoyed the vibes and food at South & East!
We also appreciated how wallet-friendly the prices were, so we definitely recommend visiting.
