We love uncovering authentic local eateries in Korea and Dae Hanok (대한옥) in Singil is one of them. The restaurant specialises in oxtail – Kkori (꼬리), literally translated as ‘tail’ – in a variety of preparations.
Oxtail isn’t a commonly used meat cut here in Singapore, but it’s frequently featured in Korean cuisine!
Unassuming Neighbourhood Store
The eatery is located along a quiet street, boasting a bright blue sign.
Everything inside screams local, from the unpretentious interior with wooden tables, the menu on the wall and no-nonsense ahjummas running the store.
The menu is fully in Korean but easily translated with Papago!
Dae Hanok Menu
The menu focuses on oxtail, which you can get in Seollongtang (설렁탕, from 10,000 won). It’s a milky bone broth made by stewing the bones for hours, usually served with various meat cuts.
They also serve the Oxtail Meat (꼬리수육, from 53,000 won), which is what we tried.
It comes covered in seasoned chives and you can unearth the meat from beneath. They also serve it with a bowl of seollongtang and kimchi.
The bones were meaty and off-the-bone tender, without any gaminess at all! The meat itself was a balanced mix of fatty and lean with some collagen bits that provided good texture.
However, the real secret to this dish is the seasoned chives.
The chives were tossed in a savoury, tangy and slightly spicy sauce which was incredibly appetizing; cutting through any fattiness of the meat.
It was borderline addictive and we easily finished the whole plate! But that’s not all – you have to order a side of noodles (국수사리, 1,000 won) to mix in with the remaining sauce.
The noodles soaked up the rest of the sauce and made for a satisfying finish!
