Quick answer: The City Bakery is a Manhattan-born bakery-cafe famous for its Pretzel Croissant and Real Hot Chocolate. It opened its first Southeast Asian outpost at Mandarin Gallery, 333A Orchard Road, #04-05. It’s open daily from 9am to 9.30pm, offering an all-day bakery counter plus a “Pan No Mi” cafe-restaurant menu with bread and wine pairings and terrace seating overlooking Orchard Road.
If you’ve spent time in New York or Osaka, The City Bakery needs no introduction. The cult-favourite bakery cafe known for its Pretzel Croissant and mug-sized Real Hot Chocolate has now landed on Orchard Road, marking its first foray into Southeast Asia.
What Is The City Bakery?
The City Bakery was founded in 1990 in Manhattan’s Union Square by Maury Rubin, an Emmy Award-winning television producer turned pastry chef who trained under French pastry masters in Lyon and Paris.
The bakery built its name on locally sourced ingredients and a fresh-over-frozen philosophy, which earned a spot on the Smithsonian magazine as “the best croissant in New York City”.
In 2013, the brand expanded to Osaka, then spread across Japan to Tokyo, Kyoto, Fukuoka and Hiroshima, drawing queues long enough that outlets had to cap purchases of its signature pastry at two per customer.
Where Is The City Bakery Singapore Located?

The City Bakery Singapore is at Mandarin Gallery, 333A Orchard Road, #04-05, making it one of the more notable new additions to the mall and the stretch of bakeries and cafes in Orchard overall.

You’re greeted by a dazzling display of freshly baked breads and pastries, which you can enjoy in their dedicated seating areas.
The space is split into two distinct sections: a cafe and a dine-in restaurant. Both have plenty of seating but with distinct aesthetics.

The bakery section is brighter, wood-themed and casual. It feels like a good space to work but sadly we didn’t spot any charger plugs.
The dine-in restaurant space is elevated with blue and black decor, almost reminiscent of New York city. It has an open bar and ambient ceiling lights, making it better for intimate after-work gatherings.
What Should I Order At The City Bakery Singapore?
Their two famous items are the Pretzel Croissant and the Real Hot Chocolate, the reason this bakery built a cult following in the first place.

They also have a rotating menu of over 10 fresh bakes, bagels and pastries that you can enjoy in-store or bring home. Look forward to items like:
- Breads: Sourdough loaves ($5 for half loaf), Focaccia ($4.30)
- Savoury pastry: Sausage Danish ($6.20), Croque-monsieur ($7.40) and more
- Sweet pastry: Blueberry Corn Muffins ($4), Brookie ($4) and more
- Cookies: Peanut Butter ($4.50), Chocolate Chunk ($4.50), Oatmeal Raisin ($4.50) and more

The Pretzel Croissant ($5) is The City Bakery’s breakout item: a laminated, buttery croissant dough with the salty character of a German pretzel.
While we enjoyed the malty, salty flavour, the texture left much to be desired. It was too dense and lacked the usual laminated layers we expected in a croissant. It’s best enjoyed warm.

We preferred their Pretzel Bagel ($3.80). These were chewy and held up well for both sweet and savoury fillings like Blueberry Cream Cheese and Mentaiko Potato.
Their Savoury sandwiches were simple but satisfying, with ingredients like Tonkatsu and Ham & Zucchini.
The Real Hot Chocolate ($8.70) is made from high-quality couverture chocolate and topped with a house-made marshmallow.
This was basically a cup of drinkable chocolate! Not too sweet, bitter or acidic, it was balanced and indulgent.

Their signature CB Cookie Shakes are also worth a try, in flavours like Espresso Chocolate ($9.40) and seasonal Masala Chai & Oatmeal ($9.60).
The Pan No Mi Concept: Bakery Meets Restaurant

Beyond the bakery counter, the Mandarin Gallery outlet also runs on the concept of “Pan No Mi”, a cafe-restaurant menu built around sharing food and bread pairings alongside housemade cocktails.
There’s a terrace that looks over the everyday hustle of Orchard Road, making it a good option for a relaxed, sit-down meal.
They have a brunch and dinner tapas menu, complete with wines and cocktails.

Everything is designed to pair well with bread, including items like Burrata & Fruit Caprese ($28) and Hummus & Olives ($15).
We recommend the Salmon Tartare ($23), served with a slice of sourdough. This was refreshing, creamy and appetizing, a good start to the meal.
If you prefer hot starters, there are items like Bakes Artichoke & Camembert ($18), Shio Koji Roasted Chicken ($26) and more.

Their CB Cheeseburger ($25) features a juicy beef patty with hummus, french fries and a kale tabbouleh salad.
Other hearty mains include an Argentinian Ribeye Steak ($52/250g) and Roasted Lamb Loin ($58/200g), making it a comprehensive dinner menu!
Is The City Bakery Singapore Worth Visiting?
With its stellar reputation in New York and Japan, The City Bakery is worth the patronage. Whether it be for their popular bakes or hearty dine-in menu, the space is designed for intentional gatherings or quiet solo time, making it a good pitstop while exploring Orchard Road.
While in the area, make sure to check out other cafes and bakeries like Yimanfen, Yoajung and ever-popular Yo-Chi.
