Everybody loves Korean BBQ, especially Koreans. No matter where you are in Korea, you can always find a Korean BBQ restaurant nearby. Samgyeopsal, also known as pork belly, is probably one of the most eaten cuts of meat for Korean BBQ. Well, that love for Samgyeopsal is now evident in a jelly, shaped like a pork belly.
Samgyeopsal Jelly
The jelly is packed in a semi vacuumed packed plastic packaging. The jelly is placed in a plastic tray with a logo that also resembles the actual pork belly sold in supermarkets. Maybe a styrofoam tray would have made the jelly look more like pork belly.
The logo also specifically said not to grill the pork belly jelly. Perhaps people really mistook this for actual meat?
Once opened, there was an immediate strong whiff of strawberry that overwhelmed the senses.
Texture-wise, it felt like any jelly, but perhaps less chewy compared to some brands out there. It wasn’t sticky and was super easy to cut as well.
The funny thing is, if you look at it long enough, it really does look like a strip of pork belly seen at Korean BBQs. It would look perfect if the lines weren’t so neat. If they increased the thickness slightly, it could 100% pass off as pork belly. Right now, the jelly resembles bacon strips as well.
Taste-wise, not great. The artificial flavour of strawberry was off the charts and was also really sweet.
A quick search online revealed two distinct groups – those who loved it and those who hated it. Some loved it because it was sweet, while some hated it because of how sweet it was. But one thing’s for sure, both groups only tried it once and didn’t buy it again.
Verdict
We wouldn’t recommend eating this but it does make a great and funny souvenir for your friends. Maybe for the novelty and fun of it, trying this pork belly jelly once would suffice.
