There are so many tonkatsu restaurants in Singapore, but new names keep entering the market with their offerings! Shin Katsu is a premium Japanese tonkatsu restaurant helmed by former Head Chef of Ma Maison, Chef Matsubayashi Masato.
Shin Katsu Menu
The menu revolves around are, globally sourced pork cuts like the Hungarian Mangalica Rosu Katsu Set ($42.80) and U.S. Kurobuta Hire Katsu Set ($36.80).
The Hungarian Mangalica Rosu Katsu Set is only available in limited portions daily.
Every tonkatsu is coated in a custom panko that keeps each cutlet light, crisp, and juicy.
Each set is served with refillable miso soup, charcoal-grilled rice, crisp cabbage, and house-made pickles, forming a well-rounded and comforting meal that’s both refined and satisfying.
Not into pork? There’s the Ebi Fry Set ($33.80) and Chicken Katsu Set ($21.80), as well as Katsu Curry Sets ($25.80) – paired with rich Japanese curry and crispy chicken or pork cutlets.
Sides
Kushi Katsu (Deep-fried Skewers)
The Chicken Thigh ($3.80 for 1 piece) was deep-fried to perfection, giving it a crunchy bite, though we wished it was juicer.
The Asparagus ($2.80 for 1 piece) was breaded and fried for a crispy exterior with a juicy, slightly sweet centre.
Appetisers
The Boneless Chicken Wings ($8.80 for 3 pieces) are marinated in a sweet sauce – it’s juicy, flavourful, and super convenient to eat!
The Potato Salad ($6.30) was simple, creamy with just enough texture from bits of veggies. A classic side that pairs well with all the fried goodies.
The Unagi ($8.80) gave the tender eel a crisp golden crust while keeping the inside rich and buttery.
Tonkatsu Set
Mangalica Hungarian Rosu Katsu
Often dubbed the “Kobe beef of pork”, this Mangalica Hungarian Rosu Katsu Set ($42.80 for 160g) is prized for its rich marbling and buttery texture.
The cutlet is juicy, tender, and flavourful – though we did find the coating on the oily side.
Mille-Feuille Black Truffle Katsu Set
The Mille-Feuille Black Truffle Katsu Set ($37.80) featured Japanese thinly sliced pork and black truffles in multiple layers served with truffle salt.
Despite the generous amount of truffle, it wasn’t too funky or overbearing! The layers of meat also added a nice textural contrast.
This was unique and definitely a must-try if you visit! Not many tonkatsu stores in Singapore serve this so it’s nice to see it offered here.
Shin Katsu Combo Set
Shin Katsu Combo Set ($34.80) is a hearty mix of fried prawn, Canadian pork loin cutlet, and Canadian pork tenderloin cutlet.
We liked that there were options, making it a great pick if you want to try different cuts in one set. Of the three, the prawn stood out the most to us!
Tonkatsu in Tanjong Pagar
While some items didn’t quite hit the mark for us as they leaned on the oilier (and pricier) side, Shin Katsu is still worth a visit if you’re curious about elevated tonkatsu and looking to try something a little different!
