Amber Ember: Upper Serangoon Road Cafe Now Has A Bigger Space, Serving Breakfast All Day

Amber Ember is a cafe situated right between Serangoon and Hougang and is one of the original cafes in the area before Urban Table & The Bread Rack joined the neighbourhood.

Previously, the cafe had limited seating, but after a revamp last July, the cafe is now bigger & better, with more seating and an equally aesthetic interior. Replacing the previously pink walls with an off-white textured cement screed wall made the place seem brighter and more hip.

Cafe Serving Jaffles & More

Amber Ember is probably known for their Jaffles, but they have more than that. You can expect Sourdough toasts, such as a Curried Mentaiko Egg Mayo ($14) one.

From 11am, the cafe also offers pasta and snacks, such as a Truffle Mushroom Sage Fettucine ($21), Classic Bolognese ($23) and Sichuan Mala Shoestring Fries ($11).

They also have a small range of bakes such as Butter Croissants ($4), Chocolate Croissants ($5) and a Pear Crumble Danish ($5.5). For the sweet tooth, indulge in their buttermilk waffles in flavours such as PB & J ($13) or John Lemon ($14).

Cheesus Loves You

A brioche toast with Emmental, mozzarella, caramelized onions and blue cheese mayo pressed in a cast iron, finished off with a drizzle of balsamic glaze. Much like its name, you’ll experience a punch of cheese flavours that complement well with the sweet, caramelized onions.

We did find this slightly jelak towards the end, so opting for a side of rocket might help instead of tapioca chips.

Sambal Scramble

Catching our attention immediately with its thick layer of creamy scrambled eggs, the Sambal Scramble ($16.5) had a layer of sambal chorizo mince on top of the eggs and is finished with chilli threads and balsamic glaze.

Interestingly, we found the sambal chorizo mince having a similar flavour to hae bi hiam, or dried sambal shrimp. The sourdough itself had a nice crisp, which was a nice contrast of texture from the eggs.

Beef Ragu Pasta

We also had the Beef Ragu Pasta, which seems to have been removed from their recently updated menu. The beef ragu pasta was slightly on the watery side, with strong beefy flavours.

Miso Butter Prawn Pasta

The Miso Butter Prawn Pasta ($24) had a nice balance of creaminess, with an umami miso fragrance and buttery flavours. We loved the texture of the pasta and how they added furikake to the dish.

The prawns used were tiger prawns and carried a pinch of smokiness from the grill.

Truffle Tater Tots

In case you didn’t know, it seems like tater tots are the new fries. We opted for the Truffle Tater Tots ($11) which came with shavings of grana Padano. When the dish was served to us, we were immediately greeted by the truffle fragrance. With crispy textures from each piece of a tater tot, this dish was extremely addictive!

Oat Milk Chai

Out of the drinks we tried, we were most impressed by the Oat Milk Chai ($7) by Grounded Pleasures. The drink was creamy, and we could taste the spices used in the drink. However, it would have been great if the drink was less sweet.
