There is more to Japanese food than just ramen and gyoza, and Tampopo is here to prove it with their Niigata Food Fair! The long-standing Japanese restaurant is offering a special menu showcasing the specialties of Niigata prefecture.
What Is The Niigata Food Fair?
The Niigata Food Fair is a limited-time menu at Tampopo that showcases dishes and ingredients unique to Niigata Prefecture, Japan.
The prefecture is home to cities like Nagaoka, Kamo and Shibata.
A highlight is the Shinnosuke rice, famed for its mellow sweetness, richer flavour and firm, springy texture.

The menu spans 19 items. Look forward to dishes like Hegi Soba with Uni & Ikura ($29.80), which uses a special buckwheat noodle, and a Chirashi Sushi Don ($29.80) with Shinnosuke rice.

But to get the best taste of everything, there is the Niigata Umaimon Gozen ($35.80).
This set features six dishes, including other Niigata specialities like Amaebi (sweet prawn) and Oguchi lotus root.

We really enjoyed the Oguchi lotus with prawn paste! The crisp and crunchy lotus complemented the bouncy prawn meat; quite different from the starchier local lotus root.

A must-order is the Handmade Rice-flour Tagliatelle with Amaebi ($27.80). It’s a collaboration dish with Japanese restaurant THE NIIGATA Bit GINZA.
The thicker cut pasta had a pleasant chewiness, clinging to the thick, umami-rich prawn sauce.
Made from the concentrated flavour of 20kg of amaebi shells, this was indulgent and savoury. We couldn’t get enough!

For something lighter, try the Niigata Soul Food “Noppe” ($9.80).
Usually enjoyed during festivals, this hearty stew has lotus, meat and seasonal vegetables in a dashi broth. Despite its simple looks, it was flavourful and comforting.

Niigata also has some sweet treats, including a Niigata Matcha Parfait ($11.80) and Echigo no Tsuki ($4.80/piece), a popular omiyage (food souvenir). This iteration is filled with a sweet, creamy custard.
