Famous Unagi chain Unatoto is coming to Singapore on 25 January 2023! Unatoto is a highly popular fast-food restaurant chain in Japan specialising in unagi, with affordable prices and quick serving times.
Japanese Unagi In Tanjong Pagar
If you’re unfamiliar with Unatoto, it’s actually a Japanese unagi chain with over 100 outlets in Japan, Hong Kong, Thailand and Vietnam. The Singapore outlet sits in the basement of Guoco Tower in Tanjong Pagar, boasting an open kitchen concept where you can watch the chefs expertly prepare your dishes over a charcoal fire.
The seating space can accommodate 56 pax and is adorned with uniquely Japanese decor, such as lanterns and Japanese-inspired art on the wall. The colourful Japanese paper umbrellas hanging on the ceiling were a nice touch as well.
Unatoto Menu
At Unatoto, you’ll find unagi served differently, from Tempura Unagi ($6) to Unagi Chawanmushi ($6). With a variety of dishes, there is something for everyone on the menu, such as:
- Unajyu Premium ($35)
- Unatama Don ($12)
- Aburi Unagi Sushi Roll ($12.80)
- Kabayaki & Tempua Don ($15)
There are also non-unagi options like the Oyakodon ($8.50) and Teriyaki Chicken Don ($8.50). You can also pair your meals with uniquely Japanese drinks such as the Ume Green Tea ($5) or the classic High Ball ($7.80).
Unadon
The signature Unatoto dish is the Unadon ($9.50) with a serving of glistening unagi on a bed of rice drizzled with a carefully selected honjozo soy sauce. If one piece of Unagi is not enough, double down with the Unadon Double ($14.50) which comes with twice the serving of the tender eel.
The charcoal grill gave the unagi an aromatic char, pairing perfectly with the sweetness of the soy sauce glaze. The meat was fall-apart tender contributing to a great mouthfeel atop the bite from the Japanese rice.
There are also options for set meals where patrons can either opt for hot/cold soba/udon, or a bowl of comforting red miso soup/unagi liver soup.
Unajyu Regular
The main difference between the Unajyu and Unadon is that it is served in boxes instead of bowls. However, the Unajyu meals come in different quality options, ranging from Unajyu Regular ($12) all the way to Unajyu Premium ($35).
Our Unajyu Regular ($12) came with a tender piece of unagi tail meat and rice.. Do note the rice portion is slightly lesser than the Unadon bowls and may not be enough for those who prefer a heartier meal.
Unagi Tempura Don
The Unagi Tempura Don ($15) comes with an assortment of fried unagi, mushrooms, shrimp and a whole deep-fried egg atop the rice. The crunch from the batter paired well with the meatiness of the unagi and savoury sauce. Our recommendation is to pair this with a bowl of soup to reduce the cloying factor.
Hitsumabushi
The Hitsumabushi ($13.50) is a unique method of eating unagi from Nagoya, where you pour a light broth over a rice bowl with the grilled unagi. This was our favourite variation of Unatoto’s unagi don! The rice bowl alone was tender and fragrant, but the addition of the broth mellowed out the flavours for a comforting meal.

To celebrate the launch of Unatoto’s first overseas outlet, they are offering two attractive promotions!
