Standard Bread is a trendy bread cafe in Seongsu, Seoul that’s all about bread. The bakery has taken over social media feeds with their fluffy loaves and cute barn-inspired aesthetic!
I decided to head down to see what the hype was about.
Rustic Cottage Core Aesthetic
Standard Bread leans into the cottagecore aesthetic, which is fitting given its humble bread offerings.
There’s a cute giant bread display and a fully wooden exterior with wheat bales and wood carriages.
The bakery takes up an impressive space, enough to include an artificial outdoor river/lake waiting area complete with a small bridge! The theme continues inside, with a full but cosy dining area.
You are immediately greeted by the bread section where the staff prepare their signature loaves.
The bread is baked fresh on schedule, with new batches every 20-ish minutes. They are available for takeaway too!
This is a popular cafe so there will be a wait. I waited for 40 minutes for dine-in.
They have a Catchtable system so you can take a queue number and be notified to return later!
Standard Bread Seongsu Menu
The star item is their Fresh Bread Loaves. It comes in flavours like Salted Butter (from 5,500 won), Olive (8,500 won) and Nut Gorgonzola (7,800 won).
Select flavours like the Classic Bread and Salted Butter are available in half loaves, which are convenient single cubes.
There are a selection of spreads and jams (all 2,700 won) ranging from Blueberry Cream Cheese, Black Truffle and French Chocolate Posset.
They offer some bread-centric dishes like Creme Brulee French Toast (10,000 won) and sandwiches like Romanesco Chicken (10,000 won) and Dill Cream Cheese Salmon (11,500 won).
For drinks, they have signature cream drinks like the Standard Spanner (6,800 won).
There’s something called Jam Milk (6,300 won), which features their house-made jams in vanilla, berry and chocolate. They also have teas, shakes and squashes (a.k.a fruity ades).
Classic Fresh Bread
I decided to try the plain Classic Fresh Bread (4,400 won for Single) as a tester of their offerings.
I wasn’t able to get a freshly baked loaf, but it still looked picture perfect – puffy with an appetising golden brown colour.
I admit I wish I had gotten another flavour because the bread was… alright.
It ticked all the boxes of good bread though! The crust was thin with a soft, fluffy and slightly sweet, milky fragrance. I think their recipe is milk bread-inspired so by that standard, it’s a nice loaf.
But I didn’t find the taste astonishing or noteworthy, especially for the time I waited. Maybe the Salted Butter or Olive breads might have stood out more.
I also got a side of Avocado Dill Cream Cheese (2,700 won). The cream cheese was good!
Creme Brulee French Toast
The must-order here is the Creme Brulee French Toast (10,000 won).
Every order is freshly brulee-d at the front counter. It was served in a hot skillet with a bubbling cream or custard sauce.
I was surprised to find custard on top of the egg-soaked bread!
Despite the many elements, the bread held a good bite. The custard helped to sweeten everything while adding a nice creaminess and indulgence.
It gets quite sweet so I recommend dipping it into the side of the berry compote. The tang cut through the richness and provided a refreshing, zesty berry flavour.
Standard Mocha
I tried their Standard Mocha (6,800 won) for my drink. This had a milky coffee base topped with a rich chocolate cream.
It basically tasted like its own dessert, but I was impressed at the strong chocolate flavour!
The roasted coffee notes were still present and paired well with the sweet chocolate.
Bakery In Seoul
Standard Bread has gained popularity for their aesthetics and commitment to bread. In my opinion, I think it’s a cute concept and is worth a spot on your cafe-hopping list for Seongsu. They have other outlets in Dosan and Anguk!
I recommend exploring Seongsu while waiting in the queue (if you visit)!
