Does size matter? At SOT Korean Restaurant in Telok Ayer, it might! The new Korean restaurant specialises in dishes cooked tableside over giant gamasot (a.k.a traditional Korean metal pot lids).
Traditional-Inspired Interior
The restaurant space is simple, furnished with tables that have dedicated gamasot griddles. It had a warm yellow colour and reminded us of the homey eateries in Korea.
We liked the wall dividers printed with the restaurant logo!
There’s also a photo booth at the counter, so remember to snap a picture before you go.
SOT Telok Ayer Menu
There are BBQ and stewed dishes available for the pot griddle.
Choose from the Pork BBQ Platter ($90) or Beef BBQ Platter ($120), each with 3 different meat cuts ranging between 150g to 250g. Every platter comes with a side of Steamed Egg. If you fancy intestines, they also have a Large intestine ($120) platter with 600g of daechang.
There are four Signature dishes: Dakdoritang (spicy stewed chicken), Dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken), Jjim-dak (Korean braised chicken) and Whole Chicken Soup. Every dish is $60 for 2 to 3 pax serving and $70 for 3 to 4 pax serving.
You can pair it with sides including the King Buckwheat Pancake ($25), Crispy Chicken Skin ($18) or Corn Cheese Buldak ($14).
They also offer the usual Korean dishes like Jajangmyeon ($14), Soybean Paste Jiggae ($14) and Stir Fried Pork ($13).
The drink menu includes alcohol like soju (from $18), draft beer and more.
Dakdoritang
The Dakdoritang came prepared on the gamasot, with a sizable amount of ingredients. This was when we realised just how big the pot was.
It included chicken chunks, potato, rice cakes and a lot of green onions in a thick spicy sauce
This was a well-executed dakdoritang. The chicken was tender and the sauce had a good kick, pairing well with the vegetables stewed in the gravy. Some add-ons we recommend are the Udon ($5) and Oden ($6).
You must order the cheesy Fried Rice ($8) afterwards. The rice soaked up all the residual sauce while the kimchi and seaweed added an extra umami! It’s a perfect way to finish the meal.
Large Intestine BBQ
We were pleasantly surprised to find Large Intestine – or daechang – on their menu. The platter includes 600g of intestines with onions and garlic on the side.
The staff grilled everything for us, cooking it till every piece was a crisp caramelised brown. This was indulgent and delicious, crunchy outside and bursting fat inside.
There was 0 gameiness too. Something that stand out was a rich soy sauce flavour, maybe from a marinade. It added an addictive savoury umami.
A honorary mention to the included Steam Egg, which was jiggly, soft and well-seasoned.
Sides
We tried the Seafood Pancake ($20) and Deep Fried Chicken Gizzard ($18). The Seafood Pancake had a nice crust on the outside which we appreciated, with generous amounts of prawn and squid.
The Gizzard had an enjoyable bouncy and chewy texture, complemented by the crispy outside batter. It’s best enjoyed with vinegar soy sauce to cut through the oil.
Their Makguksu ($18) was huge, full of fresh vegetables and a spicy sauce. We liked how crunchy and refreshing this was. It would pair well with their grilled meats.
Drinks
The Snow Draft Beer ($14) came topped with finely shaved ice, adding a slushy texture. There wasn’t a difference in taste though.
For something sweeter, the Earl Grey High Ball ($14) is a good choice with Earl Grey syrup.
