Thailand seems to be the land of viral foods and Running Egg is the newest addition to the list. This new hawker stall in Ang Mo Kio brings the popular Bangkok-style egg rice dish to Singapore, with all their menu options under $10!
From Bangkok To Singapore
The humble stall is in a food court in Ang Mo Kio Blk 722, identified with a bright yellow sign.
The Running Egg recipe is taken from the original chefs in Hereduan, the restaurant that popularised the dish! The ingredients are also sourced from Thailand, including sauces and eggs.
Every plate uses about four eggs, speedily cooked till creamy before being poured over rice. The oozy, silky texture of the eggs is what inspired the name.
Running Egg Menu
There are only five items on the menu: the signature Prawn ($7.80), Chicken Basil ($6.80), Pork Jowl ($7.80), Grilled Pork ($7.80) and the Singapore-exclusive Luncheon Meat ($5.80).
All the toppings are also available as a la carte top-ups. On first impression, we were impressed by the price points!
We tried the Luncheon Meat and Chicken Basil.
Luncheon Meat
The egg was undoubtedly the standout element. There was a pleasant rich eggy flavour and a soft texture that coated the rice well!
The Luncheon Meat had a crisp outside and a familiar salty, meaty taste.
But we felt the dish could do with stronger seasoning. They offer two dipping sauces from Thailand – a green chilli (we highly recommend this) and spicy fish sauce – which added a much-needed flavour.
Chicken Basil
We liked the flavour of the Chicken Basil but think it needed to be cooked or charred for longer. It had a pale colour and could do better with some smokiness.
There was a notable Thai basil taste and a nice kick from the chilli which complemented the eggs.
The Grilled Pork a.k.a Moo Ping ($4 for 2 pcs) was not memorable to us. The flavour was reminiscent of char siew but lacked that distinct Thai seasoning.
Bangkok Runny Egg Over Rice
Overall, we found Running Egg satisfactory but not worth a trip down specially for it. The concept is novel and the price points are great, making it a possible lunch option!
