Changi Airport is probably one of the last places you’d expect to find a speakeasy/hidden restaurant concept, but Chengdu Bowl has done it with their newest flagship store in Terminal 3!
Speakeasy Concept
Their restaurant space houses two dining concepts! On the outside is their eatery that offers Sichuan-inspired grain bowls, with toppings like Chongqing Spicy Chilli Chicken and Mala Fragrant Sliced Beef.
There’s even a Mahjong Zone with a mahong table and playing tiles.
However, behind the inconspicuous orange ‘vending machine’ door hides their newest speakeasy Sichuan restaurant.
The interior is darker and stylized, with touches of Chinese decor like giant mahjong tiles.
Chengdu Bowl Changi Airport Menu
The menu offers a refreshed take on Sichuan food, widening the scope beyond the usual fiery, numbing food. You can check out the full menu here!
This is still present in items like the Traditional Mapo Tofu ($16.80) and Signature Chongqing Chicken with Abalone Claypot ($30.80).
There’s a Classic Mama’s Taste section that features homelier flavours including the Fish Flavoured Shredded Pork ($18.80) and Braised Pork Belly with Sichuanese Pickles ($17.80).
They also offer sides like Rock n Roll Crispy Pork ($16.80) and Egg Fried Rice ($11.80).
Cold Dishes
We tried the Classic Spicy Assorted Skewers in Red Chilli Oil ($14.80) and Sichuan Chili Chicken with Ramen ($16.80).
Both dishes had that familiar red, vinegary spicy Sichuan chilli oil sauce.
We preferred the chicken with ramen as it was more substantial. The chicken was also tender, providing a good bite with the chewy noodles.
The skewer ingredients included prawns, chicken and black fungus. It felt lacking due to the smaller serving size but we enjoyed the variety of textures.
Hot Dishes
The Classic Spicy Chilli Chicken with Cheesy Rice Cakes ($22.80) a.k.a la zi ji packed a proper punch with a strong lingering sensation on the tongue.
The chicken pieces were well seasoned but we felt the chicken could be crunchier for a more satisfying eating experience.
Our favourite was the Mom’s Homemade Pot ($32.80 for 4 pax). This featured three preparations of rice – white, brown and crispy brown rice – in a thick, seafood-based gravy.
Despite its simple looks, the dish was surprisingly flavourful.
The gravy was savoury with a sweetness from seafood, plus a crunch from the vegetables and crispy rice. There was a good amount of seafood too, even abalone!
We also tried the Prawn with Luffa in Golden Broth ($26.80) and Sizzling Mulan Beef on Hotplate ($23.80), but both dishes didn’t stand out as much for us.
The Mulan Beef had a strong black pepper flavour but leaned on the oily side, while the Prawn in Golden Broth didn’t have any striking flavour.
However, we appreciate their use of fresh ingredients. You can taste the quality and flavour, especially in the bounce in their prawns and meats!
