It’s believed that it’s hard to find restaurants in Korea that cater to single people or solo travellers, but we think we’ve found a good contender! Samhae Jip (삼해집) in Yeongdeung-po is a restaurant that offers a $10 lunch set that’s solo-friendly.
Samhae Jip Menu
Samhae Jip specialises in Bossam (보쌈), or Korean boiled pork. This is usually served in sharing portions from small (29,000 won) to large (45,000 won) that can feed 3 to 6 people!
You can also get Jokbal (족발) or braised pig feet (from 35,000 won) and stews like Kamja Tang (감자탕, from 20,000 won) and Spicy Chicken Stew (닭볶음탕, from 25,000 won).
The item we’re featuring is their $10 Bossam Lunch Set (보쌈정식, 10,000won). This is nett price – no tax or service charge, which is crazy value!
There is another outlet in Jongno 3-ga but based on what we’ve found, only this Yeungdeung-po branch offers the $10 lunch set.
$10 Bossam Lunch Set
The lunch set comes with a single serving of bossam, radish kimchi, rice, steamed egg and free-flow sides including fresh vegetables and soup. The side dishes are all refillable!
For the price, we were impressed by the quality of the bossam. It was tender and fatty but without the porky smell.
There was also a subtle umami from the broth they cook it in, which is normally seasoned with deonjang (fermented bean paste).
The classic way to enjoy bossam is with fresh lettuce and spicy radish kimchi a.k.a musaengchae (무생채).
We also recommend trying it with Chinese cabbage to add sweetness and crunchiness to the meat.
The portion size was just right for us, leaving us satisfied and full. As promised, the bill was only 20,000won – 2 servings of the $10 lunch set. No other costs!
