We’re all probably familiar with Makgeolli, a popular alcoholic beverage in South Korea that’s made using rice. With a rising trend in collaborations between brands in Korea, the latest product to be launched between Crown Confectionary and KookSoonDang is Jollypong Makgeolli.
KookSoonDang x Jollypong
Makgeolli can be easily found in Singapore, in Korean marts, and even in local supermarkets. One of the most prominent brands is KookSoonDang, with flavoured rice wine such as Peach and Banana.
Jollypong, on the other hand, is usually found only in Korean marts in Singapore. It’s a Korean puffed wheat childhood snack that’s extremely popular in Korea, especially amongst the younger population.
The snack has a light texture, is crunchy, and has a light subtle sweetness to it. It can even double up as a cereal for some. There are cafes in Korea that use Jollypong to make Jollypong Lattes.
Collaboration Between Two Iconic Brands
The idea came about on the first episode of a Korean YouTube show called ‘God of Collaboom’ or ‘콜라붐신’ in Korean.
Some ideas suggested during the episode included using Corn Chips as a fried chicken batter and making a cushion using the shape of their Sando snack.
Jollypong Makgeolli can actually be found in certain bars in Korea before the collaboration, using Misugaru Makgeolli and topping it off with the Jollypong snack.
However, the one released by Crown Confectionary and KookSoonDang will come in the form of a canned drink.
Initially, they were only planning on producing 100,000 cans of the Jollypong Makgeolli but increased it to 300,000 cans due to a favourable response from customers during preliminary market research.
The product will be priced at 2,500won for a 350ml can, and it’ll be available in supermarkets and convenience stores in Korea,
We’re pretty curious as to how the finished product would taste like, but it already sounds like it’s going to be a savoury, nutty, sweet treat.
