It’s been a minute since we’ve gotten another Korean reality dating show since the explosion of the series Single’s Inferno. This week, a hot new bombshell enters Disney+’s roster of Korean reality shows – Pink Lie. It’s now officially available for streaming today on Disney+.
Everybody’s Hiding Something: An Interesting Premise
The Pink Lie centers around seven Koreans seeking a life-long romantic partner by spending twelve days together in the dreamy Pink House. But unlike most reality dating shows, this one has a big catch – every contestant is hiding something about themselves. It can be about anything from their age, occupation, or academic background. The ‘goal’ of the show is to find a partner that’s worthy and trusting enough to reveal their lie to – and see whether they’ll still continue the relationship.
We all like to think we know our significant other, but more often than not, it’s the things that are left unsaid that can cause the most damage. The Pink Lie pushes this to its limits by putting strangers together to let them forge a relationship from the ground up only to test it by hitting it where it hurts.
The show actively discusses the topic of prejudice. Almost all of the show’s participants lie out of fear of being judged for their secrets, many of which have deterred them from dating for many years – All they’re looking for is someone who will love them for who they are. “I started asking myself what would happen if we could create a fantasy world with no prejudice to explore how love can be expressed in a different context.” Producer Kim In Ha shared this as ‘the starting point’ of her idea for the show.
The Pink Lie has four recognisable hosts – Kim Heechul, Lee Sunbin, RalRal, and Song Wonsuk, who also ‘live’ react to the show’s events and help provide clarity to the mechanisms. The hosts are great personalities and add an injection of humour into any situation, accurately capturing what we as the audience feel. As the show progresses, the hosts also come to learn more about themselves as well. “I believed myself to be fairly bias-free about any occupation,” Kim Heechul candidly admitted, “But I never realized how seriously prejudiced I actually was!”
However, it’s not all that easy. Every few episodes, one member of the group is allowed into the Room Of Truth, where they can learn the secrets of one other person of their choice. They’re not allowed to share it with anyone else, making the entire situation tenser as more secrets are revealed. You’ll have to watch on to find out how this impacts everyone as they continue to interact with each other under the same roof. Host Song Wonsuk said that he couldn’t even give hints for the show, because ‘whatever [the secret], it’ll always go far beyond what you predict.”
Hosts RalRal and Lee Sunbin shared their strong immersion in the show. RalRal said that she ‘tried to stay as rational as possible’, but ‘couldn’t help’ but empathize with the participants; while Lee Sunbin noted that the show was an energy booster because of its events. “There were many days when we would gather in the studio after getting little to even no sleep at all…But as soon as I sat down to shoot Pink Lie, I would wake up completely!”
From true love to heartbreak, Pink Lie promises an unscripted portrayal of love without judgment. Watch on to find out the participants’ secrets and how they navigate relationships with these unsaid secrets. Catch Pink Lie on Disney+ for streaming now!
