When it comes to wagyu, the common varieties that come to mind are Kobe and Miyazaki. There’s one more lesser-talked-about but equally prized brand: Omi wagyu! You can sample this ranked cut in Steak Sudaku, the largest and first restaurant in Singapore to import this cut of wagyu.
Omi Wagyu In Singapore
Omi Wagyu is considered one of the top three Wagyu brands, alongside Kobe and Matsusaka. Steak Sudaku has made its name with Omi, with three outlets in Singapore: Telok Ayer (the newest!), Beach Road and Killiney Road.
The Telok Ayer space is small but cosy and you can sit counter-side to watch the premium beef steaks be prepared.
One thing to note is that it gets really smoky in the restaurant so you might need to have fabric spray on hand if you are particular.
Steak Sudaku Menu
Steak Sudaku serves Omi Wagyu in a few presentations, starting with A5 Grilled Marbled Omi Beef Steak (150g, $39.80).
A5 Grilled Marbled Omi Beef Steak
It’s served on a sizzling hot plate with potatoes and vegetables, finished with a drizzle of sauce!
The beef is served medium-rare, so eat it ASAP, as it will continue to cook on the hot plate.
We enjoyed the Omi wagyu! It had the same rich, beefy taste but felt cleaner than other wagyu cuts we’ve had.
This was knife-tender and melt-in-the-mouth tender, even after we left it on the hotplate for a while.
You can top up your meal with refillable rice, soup and salad for $7.
Premium A5 Omi Beef 100% Hamburg Steak
A surprising favourite for us was the Premium A5 Omi Beef 100% Hamburg Steak (150g, $26.80).
The hamburg was dense but not dry, giving a good mouthfeel alongside the tomato-based sauce. It was pretty satisfying!
Other variations include Omi Beef Diced Steak (100g, from $16.80) and Omi Beef Garlic Butter Rice ($17.80).
The Butter Rice makes for a good single-person lunch with a good mix of rice, Omi wagyu beef and vegetables.
Regular A5 Wagyu Steak
They also offer Regular A5 Wagyu Steak (150g, $29.80) and Japanese Pork Steak (150g, $26.80) for non-Omi options.
We tried the A5 Grade Lean Wagyu Steak (150g, $34.80), a less fatty cut. It had a stronger beef flavour and firmer bite, but we’d just go for the Omi Beef Diced Steak instead!
Omi Beef Gyukatsu
A recent addition is the Omi Beef Gyukatsu ($42.80), featuring a thicker cut beef patty. Despite its deep-fried exterior, the katsu stayed crispy without being oily.
We feel it would be better with a bit more seasoning, and tastes better dipped in the side of tonkatsu sauce.
