One of the more common menu items we see in Cafes in Korea is probably Einspanner. The drink is usually made by topping whipped cream on top of espresso. There are lots of places selling the drink in Korea, but we headed to Oats Coffee, one of the most famous places for Einspanner in Seoul.
Oats Coffee Yongsan
The Yongsan branch is one of the two Oats Coffee branches in Seoul. There is another one located in Mapo-gu, near Sangsu station. (Note: not Seongsu).
To head to Oats Coffee in Yongsan, simply alight at either Sookmyung Women’s University Station (Line 4) or Namyeong Station (Line 1).
We were able to spot Oats Coffee thanks to its wooden and tatami elements that stood out amongst the ordinary buildings. The cafe is of a nice cozy size, with a large table in the middle that can sit up to 8 pax. The remaining seats in the cafe are split into groups of 2 and 4.
There’s also a small seating corner near the entrance of the cafe for those who want to sip coffee alfresco.
Menu at Oats Coffee Yongsan
Their Favourite Menu items include Oats Americano (4,000won), Oats Latte (4,500won), Cold Brew Vanilla (4,500won), and the Einspanner (5,500won).
Apart from that, you can also find espresso-based beverages such as Flat White (4,500won), Vanilla Latte (4,500won), and Ice Cream Latte (5,000won). They also have three different bean options for drip coffee. From ‘River’, which has floral, cherry notes to ‘San’, a blend with dark chocolate and roasted almond notes.
Non-coffee options are quite limited with only 3 items, namely the Matcha Latte (4,500won), Milk Tea (5,000won), and Oats Chocolate (5,000won).
As for small bites, you can take your pick from their range of scones, in flavours such as Butter, Cranberry, Matcha, Chocolate, and Cheese. (3,500won to 4,000won)
Einspanner
The staff told us the best way to experience their Einspanner was to not mix the cream and coffee. Simply drink it as it is while getting a bit of cream and coffee in each sip.
The cream itself was smooth, creamy, thick, and almost sticky. When we used the wooden spoon to scoop the cream, it almost felt like a smooth ice-cream. It paired well with the coffee, balancing out the bitterness with some sweetness.
Cranberry Scone
While we were given a wooden knife for the Cranberry Scone (3,500won), the exterior crust of the scone was slightly too hard to break. We eventually had to use our hands for the scone.
The scone was on the dry side, but the cranberry jam on the top did help balance it out. Perhaps the cafe could’ve provided more of the jam as we felt we had to ration it throughout.
Cafe in Seoul
If you like your coffee with cream, try the Einspanner over at Oats Coffee. The area is only one stop away from Seoul Station, so you can easily squeeze it in if you’re ever in the area.
