Nong Geng Ji has expanded its presence in Singapore with a new outlet in Novena, marking one of its two latest locations!
Known for its bold and fiery Hunan cuisine, the restaurant specialises in dishes highlighting the region’s signature flavours—spicy, aromatic, and rich in wok hei.
Nong Geng Ji Menu
Nong Geng Ji’s menu offers a variety of dishes, ranging from bold and spicy flavours to milder options for those who prefer less heat.
Spice lovers can try their dishes like Pan-Seared Green Chillies with Century Egg ($13.80), Stir-Fried Sour and Spicy Chicken Offal ($17.80), and the flavorful Steamed Fish Head with Vermicelli and Chopped Chili ($29.80).
For those who prefer non-spicy options, comforting choices include Steamed Pork Ribs with Taro ($19.80), Sweet and Sour Chicken with Pineapple ($21.80), and Stir-Fried Baby Bamboo Shoots with Sauerkraut ($16.80).
Signature Grass Fish Fillet with Chilli
The Signature Grass Fish Fillet with Chili ($26.80) stood out as one of the more intriguing dishes.
The fish fillet had a unique texture—firm yet slightly chewy, like biting into soft cartilage.
Stir-Fried Pork With Abalone and Chilli
The Stir-Fried Pork with Abalone and Chili ($28.80) is served over a flame, keeping it warm throughout the meal.
While the thinly sliced pork is well-coated in a spicy sauce that delivered a pleasant heat without being overwhelming. The abalone did not stand out as the strong seasoning overshadowed its flavour.
Big Shrimp with Vermicelli and Garlic
The Big Shrimp with Vermicelli and Garlic($22.80) requires an 8-minute wait after being served, allowing the flavours to develop fully.
The strong garlic aroma enhanced the dish, pairing well with the fresh, bouncy prawns and vermicelli, which were well-coated in the savoury sauce.
Stir-Fried Kampung Chicken with Tea Oil
The Stir-Fried Kampung Chicken with Tea Oil ($25.80) was served in tiny bite-sized chunks with tender meat, stir-fried with black fungus that added an extra crisp texture.
The sauce packed a spicy kick, pairing well with a bowl of rice to balance the heat.
Stir-Fried Beef with Tea Oil
The Stir-Fried Beef with Tea Oil ($22.80) was our lesser favourite, as the beef was slightly tougher compared to the chicken version.
While the dish carried the same fragrant tea oil aroma, the texture of the beef lacked the tenderness that would have made it more enjoyable.
This dish might appeal more to those who prefer a firmer bite, but for a more tender option, the Stir-Fried Kampung Chicken with Tea Oil would be the better choice.
Braised Pork with Preserved Mustard Greens
The Braised Pork with Preserved Mustard Greens($27.80) had a nice balance of fat and meat, making it tender and easy to bite.
The preserved mustard greens added a tangy and slightly sour flavour that complemented the rich and savoury pork.
You-Mai Lettuce with Shredded Seasoned Mud Carp
The You-Mai Lettuce with Shredded Seasoned Mud Carp ($13.80) offered a nice contrast in textures, with the lettuce maintaining a satisfying crispness.
However, the sauce was a bit too salty for our liking. While the seasoned mud carp added a unique flavour, the excessive saltiness made it harder to enjoy in large bites.
Beancurd Skin with Egg
The Beancurd Skin with Egg ($16.80) offered a lighter taste compared to the other dishes we tried, providing a refreshing balance.
The generous portions of egg and beancurd made it a satisfying yet subtle choice. If you’re looking for a lighter option, this dish is worth considering.
Lotus Root with Superior Pork Broth
The Lotus Root with Superior Pork Broth ($24.80) didn’t stand out to us as much, as it lacked the richness we expected from the soup. While the pork was tender and soft, the chunky lotus root was a bit too mushy for our liking.
The overall flavour felt mild, and a richer broth could have made the dish more satisfying.
Deep-Fried Glutinous Rice Fritters
We ended the meal with their Deep-Fried Glutinous Rice Fritters ($5.90). The fritters had a soft, chewy texture, similar to mochi, offering a satisfying bite.
The sweetness was nicely balanced, and the light dusting of sugar added a subtle, sugary finish to round off the meal.
