Cheesecake has always been a popular dessert, with its caramelised cousin, Basque Cheesecake, getting the limelight recently. Basq & Bean is a new cafe in Bugis specialising in this indulgent sweet treat, alongside a curated list of speciality coffees.
Quaint & Cosy Interior
The cafe is tucked away in an unassuming corner in Bugis, sporting an inviting open concept with splashes of orange and greenery.
Between the metal furniture and limewashed walls, the cafe was comfortable and cosy. It is perfect for afternoon gatherings or post-lunch desserts.
Basq & Bean Menu
Their star item is the Basque Cheesecakes, available in two versions: 6-inch Rounds ($35) or 3.5-inch Minis ($15).
Basque Cheesecakes
The flavour rotation has four flavours, including Original, Dark Chocolate, Pandan Kaya and a Seasonal Special.
The cheesecakes had a creamy centre and firm outer crust, the standard of a well-executed Basque cheesecake.
We liked how none of them were too sweet! Each flavour had a natural taste which wasn’t artificial, especially the Pandan Kaya.
Flavour-wise, our favourite was the Dark Chocolate, with a nice bitterness from the chocolate layer.
When we visited, the Seasonal Special was a Mooncake Basque with lotus seed paste and salted egg yolk!
It’s novel but worked surprisingly well. The salted egg yolk didn’t overwhelm the cheesecake flavour, but added a nice saltiness to cut through the creaminess.
Something different about the Minis is the ‘unburnt’ tops, creating a gooey, oozy centre.
We tried the Snow White (a.k.a Original), with a pleasant vanilla flavour balanced by a zesty citrus note. It felt decadent but not overbearing, a comfortable dessert.
Despite the smaller size, we feel this can be comfortably shared between two people.
Coffee & Drinks
Another speciality here is their selection of coffee beans from Northern Thailand.
You can choose from three blends: Cherry Blossom Shower, Toasty Glutinous Rice and Dark Chocolate Vineyard.
They have house mixed coffee drinks like an Orange’cano ($7.80) and -96°C Dirty Coffee ($9) with milk cream.
We tried the Literal Smoked Brew ($9), which came infused with a smoke of wood chips and vanilla. This was intense, with a strong smokiness from the infusion!
If you don’t fancy coffee, try the Basq’s Lemonade ($7.80). This had a layer of slightly sweetened cheese cream to cut through the tang.
The sourness makes this a good complement to the creamy cheesecakes!
They also offer a Hot Chocolate ($8) and Black Matcha Yuzu ($9.80).
