It took us a while to find Gray Grove because when we think of cafes along the Jeju coast, they usually stand out. Gray Grove, on the other hand, looked slightly abandoned, with its stone and boulder-heavy aesthetic.
Here, the cafe space is mainly in the basement, so don’t expect a sea view despite being relatively near to Sagye Beach.
Cave-Turned-Cafe
There’s a reason why the cafe adopts a certain aesthetic. Gray Grove utilizes the space of a cave, which used to be a storage space for the nearby Sagye Village!
There are lots of raw concrete and stone elements in the cafe mixed with a bit of wooden touches here and there. There are also a lot of textures at play here, with sandy floors and unpolished surfaces that make for a unique experience.
Unlike its exterior, this cafe in Jeju had a decent number of seats, from communal tables to smaller ones that are perfect for groups of 3 to 4. However, as most of them are wooden chairs or concrete flat surfaces, it wasn’t exactly the most comfortable.
Menu at Gray Grove Jeju
The cafe specializes in a number of drinks apart from the usual Americano (5,500won), Vanilla Latte (7,000won), and Cafe Latte (6,500won). There are non-coffee options such as Jeju Matcha Latte (7,000won), Strawberry Latter (7,000won), and a small selection of caffeine-free teas.
Food-wise, they have a small selection of salt bread – original (3,800won), garlic (4,400won), squid ink (4,200won), and other items like Egg Tart (3,500won).
We opted for the Original Salt Bread and Choco Salt Bread (4,000won). The choco version didn’t just have chocolate on the outside but had a generous chocolate filling on the inside.
Texture and taste-wise they weren’t mind-blowingly good, but we collectively enjoyed the original one more than the chocolate one despite it not being overly sweet.
As for drinks, we had the Hallabong Ade (7,000won) which, well, tasted like how you would expect a Hallabong Ade to taste.
We enjoyed the Cinnamon Cream Latte (7,500won), served in a glass that’s powdered with cinnamon on the rims. The cream was really smooth, and the cinnamon didn’t overpower the coffee flavour. Instead, it paired well with the strong coffee.
There was also the Einspanner (7,500won) which came with a generous serving of cream and cocoa powder topping.
Cafe in Seogwipo Jeju
If you’re planning to explore the west of Jeju, Gray Grove is a nice spot to stop by especially if you’re around the Southern part of Jeju. Sagye beach is also really pretty and is near places like Sanbangsan, which is well known for canola flower fields in the spring!
