Japanese katsu restaurant Saboten has opened its flagship store in Vivo City! This marks their 628th store worldwide that offers quality katsu.

The menu largely focuses on pork katsu that feature the loin and tenderloin cuts for a mix of tender yet fatty meat. You can also get seafood or chicken katsu if you’re not a fan of pork!
Exclusive Katsu Set Meals
The new store boasts some Singapore-exclusive menu items like the Katsu Ni Sets, Nigiwai Katsu Sets and limited time only Oysters Katsu!
One of Saboten’s highlights is their free-flow cabbage and free-flow premium Japanese rice, which you can enjoy with your meal. Each set comes with chawanmushi, miso soup, the free-flow cabbage and free-flow rice, plus a scoop of ice cream – so you can really eat to your heart’s content.
The Nigiwai Katsu Sets (from $27.50) puts a twist on classic katsu. We tried the Nigiwai Loin & Cheese Tenderloin Katsu Set ($28) that features a half loin katsu and a cheese-stuffed tenderloin. You can also get the set with only Nigiwai loin or tenderloin if cheese isn’t up your alley!
This set also comes with two appetizers of your choice from six options like Tofu Salad, Tomato Salad or Ebi Karaage. You can taste the quality of the meat they use at Saboten, with great fat marbling, no porky smell and a clean flavour.
The breadcrumbs used are freshly made and provide a nice crisp texture! There also isn’t an unpleasant oil taste, making it a satisfying meal without the greasiness.
The Katsu Ni Sets (from $22.50) are served in a clay pot, featuring a chicken or pork katsu in a sweet, savoury sauce. We tried the Tenderloin Oroshi Katsu Ni Set ($30.50), topped with fresh grated radish that adds a refreshing crunch to compliment the heavier flavours.
The sauce is on the sweet side, but went well with their white rice, which they specially import from the Niigata Prefecture in Japan.
Limited Time Oyster Katsu
Oyster lovers should definitely try Saboten’s Oyster Katsu ($38)! It’s here for only a month to celebrate the opening of the Vivo City flagship store.
Each serving features four plump oysters from Hiroshima and a side of creamy tartar sauce. The oysters were sweet and fresh without any fishiness plus a great crunch from the breading, making it one of the better oyster katsu we’ve tried so far.
If you prefer classic, no-frills katsu, you can go for the classic Loin Katsu Set ($23 for Medium) or Tenderloin Katsu Set ($27). The Saboten Special Set ($29.50) is also an option if you want to try a bit of everything. It comes with ebi fry, tenderloin katsu, loin katsu and a crab cream croquette.
Saboten’s menu is expansive and also has Japanese curry katsu, sukiyaki and even katsu sandwich options to try!
Quality Japanese Katsu In Harboufront
If you’re looking for quality Japanese katsu, we highly recommend Saboten. Everything is executed well from the meat, breading and down to their free-flow cabbage! The restaurant can get busy during peak hours so do head down early.
