Classic Korean food like bibimbap is a dime a dozen in Singapore, but good classic Korean food is hard to find. A new contender is landing direct from Seoul to bring OG Korean cuisine here: Gwangjang Gaon!
Heritage Korean Cuisine
Gwangjang Gaon is helmed by Professor Park Hyo Soon, a qualified expert in traditional Korean cuisine.
Her background in culinary expertise and business culminated in the Gwangjang Gaon brand, dedicated to keeping the core of traditional Korean cuisine even as the culinary landscape modernises for trendy foods.
The restaurant has two outlets in Korea and has earned the patronage of many Korean celebrities like Han Ho See and Lee Jung Jae of Squid Game.
This Singapore outlet is its first overseas outpost.
Gwangjang Gaon is in Jewel Changi Airport, boasting a nice view of the Rain Vortex.
It boasts a warm design with visible Korean elements, like the wooden beams and familiar paper dividers.
Gwangjang Gaon Singapore Menu
The menu focuses on heritage Korean dishes, like bibimbap, mandu (dumplings) and gomduk (beef soup) made with time-honoured recipes passed down four generations.
Their signature is the Gaon Galbi ($69.90 for 2-3 pax), slow-cooked in their special marinade for 24 hours.
The other two specialities are Bossam ($43.90) with kimchi and cabbage wraps, and Samgyetang ($38.90). These are classic Korean dishes served in the classic way for the most authentic experience.
Other dishes to try include the Gomguksi ($16.90), a rich ox bone broth with noodles and Gondre Bibimbap ($16.90) that uses a wild Korean herb and vegetables.
They also offer a soup and noodle selection, including Ugeoji Gukbap ($23.90), a spicy beef broth, and Chogye Guksi ($17.90), a cold chicken noodle dish.
Classic Bibimbap
Their signature item is the Classic Bibimbap ($22.90), featuring a colourful mix of 13 ingredients like fresh vegetables and minced beef.
This tasted healthy but hearty, but flavour-wise it did not stand out to us. We recommend adding the sides of spicy gochujang sauce and a soy-based sauce.
Deulgireum Makguksu
One of our favourites was the Deulgireum Makguksu ($21.90), a.k.a perilla oil noodles. This was incredibly fragrant, refreshing and appetising, perfumed by the rich perilla oil and seaweed.
It was served with crispy perilla seeds that gave that extra crunch.
Modm Jeon
Another special Korean dish is the Modm Jeon ($29.90), a platter of shrimp, pollack, zucchini, ground pork, and crab stick in a light egg wash.
This is usually served during the Korean New Year (Chuseok) and everything was so ornate! Of the jeon selection, we liked the zucchini and pork patties best.
Bossam
The Bossam ($43.90 for 2-3 pax) is our pick of the menu. This was served with fresh Chinese cabbage and housemade bossam kimchi, presented on a Hojokban or traditional Korean tableware.
The meat was tender and fatty but not oily, infused with a pleasant soy sauce flavour! It tasted close to what we’ve tried in Korea, which was a pleasant surprise.
It was a satisfying bite with the fresh vegetables and tangy bossam kimchi to cut through the richness.
Gaon Galbi
Another signature is their Gaon Galbi ($69.90 for 2-3 pax). The rib is sous vide, giving a melt-in-your-mouth tenderness while retaining some bite.
The marinade itself was savoury but not too sweet for a nice balanced flavour. There was a side of spicy spring onions but we found it a tad too salty!
Opening Promotion
From 25 to 27 July 2025, enjoy a free plate of Chogye Nangchae (U.P. $18.90) with any order of Gaon Galbi or Bossam!
This dish features cold tossed chicken and vegetables tossed in a refreshing dressing of vinegar and soy sauce.
