With the recent surge of new Korean restaurants in Singapore, Gwanghwamun Mijin stands out. The 70-year-old Korean restaurant is bringing its legacy of buckwheat noodles (memilmyeon) to local diners, having been on the Korean Michelin Bib Gourmand list for 8 years.
The restaurant officially opens on Friday, 22 August 2025.
Simple, Airy Interior
The space is simple with a nice green accent colour, warm wood furniture and even a private room!
There were mirrors and pockets of natural light that made the space look bigger.
It was still under construction when we visited and we think it would look even better complete.
Gwanghwamun Mijin Menu
Gwanghwamun Mijin’s specialty is memilmyeon (메밀면) or buckwheat noodles. They’re a family-owned restaurant with over 10 outlets in Korea, producing their own noodles and broths.
The Singapore outlet (first outside of Korea!) ships over these same noodles and broth to keep the taste and quality.
Signature Buckwheat Noodle Set
Their star item is the Signature Buckwheat Noodle Set ($16) that comes with a tray of chilled buckwheat noodles, slushy broth and garnishes.
The noodles are good, with a firm bite and mild flavour of buckwheat! They aren’t meant to be chewy, but something more similar to soba.
We also liked the katsuobushi-based broth with an appetising sweet-savoury taste. It leans more sweet, so you can adjust with the provided seaweed, radish and wasabi.
The broth is served in slushy form to keep that icy, refreshing texture. This was perfect for the hot weather!
These are available in other variations like a hot Broth ($16) and Bibim Noodle ($16), which didn’t stand out for us.
Perilla Buckwheat Noodle
Our favourite and must-order dish is the Perilla Buckwheat Noodle With Marinated Salmon ($16). The marinated salmon is a Singapore-exclusive!
It was nutty, savoury but not overbearing. The fragrance of the perilla oil and firm noodles made for an addictive combo, especially with the inclusion of perilla powder.
Meats & Sides
The menu also includes protein options like Bossam, Tonkatsu and Pan-Fried Salmon.
Between the two meats, we preferred the Tonkatsu more! Generous portions, crispy pork and a sweet dipping sauce.
The Bossam was enjoyable but the bossam kimchi could have been spicier and more seasoned.
Something special are the Steamed Korean Dumplings ($7/3 pcs). These are hand-wrapped in-store and massive, packed with pork and glass noodles; but we felt it needed more depth of flavour.
