Pickle Bakery is the latest addition to the Everton Park community. Opened during the last week of March 2021, Pickle Bakery has been attracting bread lovers since day 1. They now join other cafes around the area such as The Better Half, Hodunamu and Nylon Coffee Roasters.
Artisanal Bakery near Outram Park MRT
We headed over on a Saturday morning and arrived right on time at 8.30 am. Even on their first weekend, there were already returning customers who came as early as us!
We did some research via their Instagram and realized that their bakes were nearly sold out by noon for the past few days.
However, Pickle Bakery doubled their output for the weekend, so they had sufficient bakes to go around. #kiasufornothing
Why Pickle Bakery?
We asked owners Jas and Liz, why they decided on Pickle for the name of their bakery and the answer was simple. There was no reason behind the name.
They explained that sometimes people tend to put too much thought behind the name, and may sometimes fall short of their initial expectations for the brand. So this time around, they decided to just go for something random and that’s how Pickle Bakery was named.
Fun fact: They initially wanted the bakery to be called Funny Pickle.
Pickle Bakery Menu
Take your pick from whole sourdough loaves, baguettes and even tartines. The menu rotates regularly, so you might see some new items every day.
Tartines
For the tartines, they are available from 9 am daily and come in different combinations such as Parma Ham & Burrata, Ham Brie & Pickles and even a Mushroom, Potato & Bechamel one.
The owners recommended the Mushroom, Potato & Bechamel Tartine which had slices of potatoes and mushrooms sprinkled with thyme.
The flavours were really hearty, with the centre filling almost tasting like a potato mushroom-based stew. The bread had a nice crusty exterior, that complimented the soft, airy and chewy sourdough.
Viennoiseries
As for the pastries, there are bakes such as Plain Croissants, Smokey Cheddar Sausage Rolls and Kinako Snails.
The Kinako Snails caught our attention because of its name. The pastry is essentially a croissant sprinkled with roasted soybean powder (also known as Injeolmi in Korean). You can get a hint of nuttiness from the kinako, which does not overpower the buttery flavours of the croissant.
Assorted Buns
Apart from pastries and tartines, Pickle Bakery also has a range of assorted buns such as Herbs & Kalamanta, Olives and Sprouted Quinoa.
While they look similar to the tartines, the assorted buns are thicker in size but smaller in diameter as compared to the tartines.
The one that stood out the most to us was the Figs, Blue Cheese & Walnut Bun.
Admittedly, we aren’t fans of blue cheese because of its overpowering flavours. However, the one here at Pickle Bakery isn’t too bad. The characteristic pungent flavour of the blue cheese doesn’t overwhelm the senses due to the addition of honey.
With each bite, you get the creaminess of the cheese with the sweet, fruity notes of the fig. The walnuts were a joy, but we did hope for more on the bun.
