You’ve heard of alcoholic ice cream and gelato, but have you had it at 6% alcohol percentage before? High Bar Society in Tanjong Pagar is offering a specialty menu of cocktail gelatos at 6% ABV (alcohol per volume), making them the first in Singapore to do so.
Stylish Interior
Their storefront sports a sleek, all-black design. In the front is a small bar which leads to an intimate seating space.
There’s a picturesque wall decor in the shape of a moon, illuminating the dim space. It has the vibes of a speakeasy and would be good for post-dinner drinks!
High Bar Society Menu
The star of the menu are the Gelato Cocktails, available in 18 flavours! Each gelato features different alcohols and spirits including Champagne, Single-Malt Whisky and even Absinthe.
Options include gin-based Sapphire Sunrise (Kochi Yuzu with Pomelo, $15/single, $50/pint) or rum-based More Heat, Oh? (Mojito, $15/single, $50/pint). For something stronger, try the whisky-based Misty Scotsman (Nama Chocolate, $18/single, $60/pint) or bourbon-based B Cup (Sea Salt Butterscotch, $15/single, $50/pint).
They also have a selection of actual cocktails and bar bites! Drinks available include Barbie’s Pink Fro ($18) with vodka and melon liquor and Berry Posh ($22) with chamboard and raspberries. Pair your food with bites like Marinated Cold Tofu ($12) and Zing & Blossom ($14), an osmanthus-infused lime mousse.
Gelato Cocktail
We tried three flavours of gelato: The Highland Fling, Omm… and Yellow Fever.
The Highland Fling ($19/single, $65/pint) is infused with The Macallan and flavoured with dark chocolate and chocolate bits. We were surprised by the flavours! The first taste is from the chocolate with a slight bitterness, before the punch from the alcohol. Be warned, it’s quite strong!
Despite the high alcohol percentage, we found that all three gelatos were easy to enjoy. Ommm… ($15/single, $50/pint) featured traditional Chinese Baijiu and white chrysanthemum, which had a more delicate, fragrant flavour. This is one flavour we’d recommend!
For something easier on the palette, the tequila-based Yellow Fever ($15/pint, $50/pint) is a good choice. The mix of tangy mango and passionfruit take some edge off the alcohol, and did not have the strong aftertaste of tequila.
Cocktails
For cocktails, we had the Back In Thyme ($18) and Kultual Kooler ($18).
Back In Thyme is vodka-based, flavoured with blueberries and fresh thyme. It had a pleasant sweetness from the berries and herby thyme. This is a good option for light drinkers!
The Kultural Kooler features ginger, lemongrass and lime leaf, all infused into the drink. We enjoyed the spiced undertones, though we think it could be even more spiced for a better punch.
Bar Bites
The Salmon Avocado Tartare ($16) was on theme, served in a cocktail glass. It came with cubes of marinated salmon cubes and creamy wasabi avocado puree, complemented by the crunchy wanton skins. This was quite addictive and paired great with the cocktails.
For a savoury-sweet pairing, there’s Figs & Feta ($15). Each bite had sweet caramelised fresh figs, which paired perfectly with the salty feta cheese!
The Smoke & Barrel ($16) is a Gusiness basque cheesecake, which came with encased with applewood smoke. It was rich and creamy, with a light hoppiness from the beer and smokiness from the applewood.
