It’s a rare occasion to dine at any Michelin Star restaurant in Singapore, but Araya in Tanjong Pagar made the experience more accessible! They are now offering a new three-course lunch set for only $80++, which we find to be good value for the experience.
Araya Menu
Araya is the world’s first and only Chilean restaurant with a Michelin star.
Their menu centers around traditional Chilean flavours and fresh produce, which are presented to their guests with every dish. Think different peppers, tubers and more!
They do set menus at $168, $298 and $368 per person. You can check out the full menu here.
The dishes feature a lot of seafood including King Crab, sardines and scallops!
You can look forward to trying different Chilean spices and influences, like Kinki fish with kiwicha (a Peruvian supergrain) and Sardine Escabeche (sardines fried in olive oil).
Three-Course Lunch Set
The lunch set includes a pre-meal bread course, starter, main and dessert. It has a set selection of dishes with options for top-ups at each course.
La Panera
The meal started with the Chapaele, a traditional Chilean sourdough potato bread. It had a hard crust but soft and fluffy interior, with a richness from the sourdough.
The star were their housemade butters: an umami-rich cochuayuyo butter made with seaweed found in Chilean waters and a smokey, spicy merken spread with Chilean spices.
Starters
We tried Beetroot, featuring thinly sliced confit beetroot and roasted beet sorbet. This tasted light and refreshing, without any unpleasant earthiness!
The sorbet added a nice tang, but the star was the topping of puffed quinoa for an extra crunch.
You can also get the Hokkaido scallop Ceviche for a $15 top-up, with ginger jelly and leche de tigre sorbet.
Mains
The set main was the Cordero, charcoal grilled lamb with cochayuyo marmalade and coffee jus.
It had a great smokey, sweet crust on the outside but buttery meat on the inside. This was served on the rarer side and had a subtle gamey taste which might be overbearing for some.
We liked it best with the savoury coffee jus and added umami from the marmalade! The side of tender green salad also cut through the richness.
If lamb isn’t your choice of protein, you can opt for Wagyu Picana ($12 top up) or Pacific Cod ($22 top up).
It was also served with a hefty bowl of Chorizo Arroz, a thick stewed rice.
This was packed with flavour, a slight sweetness from the cured meat and crunch of peas. Definitely filled us up!
Dessert
Dessert was a fusion of orange and chocolate, using all elements of the orange for zero waste.
The tang of the orange complemented the richness of the chocolate, keeping it balanced.
The assortment of textures – mousse, sesame ‘twigs’ and chocolate crumbs – kept everything interesting!
