Located in Changsin-dong, South Korea, a neighbourhood right beside Dongdaemun subway station is Tertre Cafe. The place is known as a sunset hotspot as the cafe has windows that give you an unobstructed view of Seoul, with the sun setting in the background.
Getting To Tertre Cafe in Seoul
Getting to the cafe might be somewhat of a challenge, as it’s located right at the top of Changsin-dong, a neighbourhood that’s known for its steep slopes and confusing roads.
One easy way is to hail a cab and you’ll find yourself right in front of the cafe in no time. The ride will feel like a rollercoaster at times due to the slopes.
Another way would be exiting via Dongdaemun/Changsin subway station and climbing your way up to the top. Simply input ‘테르트르’ in your Naver map app and follow the directions provided.
Bird’s Eye View of Seoul
Even from the cafe entrance, you can already see the entire view of Seoul. However, you’ll be glad to know that levels 2 and 3 have ceiling-to-floor windows that are perfect for photos.
They also have a rooftop where you can experience a 360-degree view of Seoul and take some pretty Instagram shots as well. Try spotting some famous landmarks such as Namsan Tower and DDP.
Visiting during golden hour would be the best since you can watch the sun go down while sipping on your beverage. It’s a rather healing experience, just watching clouds pass by and the sun setting on another day.
Menu at Tertre Cafe Seoul
Unlike the usual cafes, Tertre Cafe has a pretty unique drink menu. You can still find classic items like Americano (7,000won), Flat White (7,500won) and Vanilla Bean Latte (8,000won).
One of their signature drinks is the Pink Ade (8,500won) which is a lemonade that turns pink once you pour the lemon base into the flower petal tea.
They also have desserts like Lotus Ang Butter (6,000won) and Brownie Pot (8,000won).
Do note that you’ll have to place your orders first and stay around the first floor while waiting for your orders since the buzzer doesn’t work on other floors.
Black Latte
The first item on their menu was the Black Latte (9,000won) which is also probably one of the most expensive drinks on their menu. The drink is the cafe’s rendition of a mocha, with an espresso-dark chocolate mixture served on the side.
It wasn’t too sweet and had a nice subtle blend of dark chocolate and coffee flavours.
Malcha Vienna
The Malcha Vienna (8,500won) is almost like a latte topped with cream foam and a thin layer of matcha powder. Interestingly, this drink is served decaf, which was indicated on their menu.
You’re supposed to drink this like an einspanner, so don’t mix the cream with the drink when you receive it!
The layer of cream was so smooth, which went well with the coffee. Despite the seemingly thin layer of matcha powder, you can get a strong whiff of matcha with each sip. The matcha layer almost felt caramelized, which was rather interesting.
Crème Brulee Latte
One of the newer drinks was the Crème Brulee Latte (9,000won). Just like an actual crème brulee, the espresso-based drink also had a caramelized layer on the top, which you can crack using a spoon.
The caramelized sugar adds a nice pinch of sweetness and smokiness to the drink.
Cafe With A View in Seoul
With a view like this, Tertre Cafe is going on our list of must-visit cafes in Seoul. Not only is the view great, but the drinks we tried were decent as well, although a bit on the pricey side.
We highly recommend visiting an hour before sunset, and staying till you get a night view, which is an entirely different vibe.
