New Bahru is the latest it destination in Singapore, and there seems to be something for everyone. For wine lovers, Le Clos might just be the push you need to visit the newest complex in Singapore.
Le Clos is a 70-seater wine house and restaurant offering over 800 labels of wine. It’s also home to a speciality delicatessen retailing wines and delicacies like cold cuts and cheeses.
A Relaxing Spot for Wine in Singapore
Le Clos caters to both casual drinkers and connoisseurs, with bottles of approachable everyday wines to rarer, and harder-to-find bottles. The wines here are mainly from France, but they do have options for other renowned regions.
That’s perfect because the restaurant primarily serves French comfort food, which pairs amazingly with the wines.
Pick from any of their indoor seats or opt for the alfresco terrace which is perfect for some day drinking.
Food & Wine at Le Clos
Starting off our experience at Le Clos with some bubbles – the Drappier Brut Nature Zero Dosage ($24/glass, $129/bottle). It’s a dry and crisp champagne, with high acidity and a light mouthfeel making it the perfect starter drink.
We paired this with the Octopus Tempura & Espelette Pepper Mayo ($18). A simple but well-executed dish featuring octopus tempura dusted with hot paprika and lime zest. Make sure to get some of that creamy dip!
It also paired amazingly with the Croq’ Basque Chorizo, Confit Onions & Roasted Piquillo Peppers ($25) which is a reimagination of the classic croque monsieur. Here, instead of ham and cheese, it’s filled with French chorizo, confit onions and roasted peppers. A mix of savoury, sweet and mildly spicy flavours that pair well with the Drappier’s acidity.
Our next bottle is a dry, light white wine – the Sancerre Cotat Caillotte 2023 ($129/bottle) which we paired with the Watermelon, Feta & Mint Salad ($20).
This cold mint-infused watermelon salad is served together with crumbled feta, pine nuts and mint oil. We loved the subtle sweetness of the watermelon paired with the nuttiness and texture of pine nuts.
Food & Wine Pairing at Le Clos
For our mains, we chose to pair it with the Domaine Mayard Chateauneuf-du-Pape ($155/bottle), a light and balanced red wine.
The Homemade Tagliatelle Spanner Crab & Bisque ($32) was one of our favourites of the night. It featured generous chunks of spanner crab with perfectly cooked strands of pasta. The coconut milk finish was a nice touch, adding depth and richness to the dish.
We also paired the wine with Morisseau Mussels, Vin Jaune Mariniere and Homemade Fries ($32). Yes, you can pair seafood with red wine! The light and balanced red wine brought out the sweetness of the mussels.
Our last main was Macka’s M4+ OP Rib Black Angus ($17/100g) that’s cooked in a Josper oven and served with Bordelaise Sauce. Very nicely cooked, and the meat pairs amazingly with the red wine.
Desserts at Le Clos
We enjoyed the Hazelnut Praline Choux ($13) and Raspberry Tart Sable ($16) which are both available for purchase at the deli as well! The hazelnut choux puff has a pastry cream that’s infused with vanilla, topped with a hazelnut praline centre.
The raspberry tart on the other hand features a golden sable base with a vanilla pastry cream and raspberry jam centre topped with the most raspberries we’ve seen on a dessert!
