*Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers from the hit drama, The World of the Married.*
The World of the Married is probably the epitome of the proverb: “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”. The ups and downs, twist and turns within the drama are enough to make your blood boil. This is probably how the drama managed to be the highest-rated Korean drama in cable television history, overtaking Sky Castle. While the show manages to keep you at the edge of your seat, there are so many underlying messages within the show that we can takeaway.
1. Communication is Key in a Marriage
Everything would have been better if Tae-Oh decided to talk about things to his wife., instead of talking to Dr. Sul, about how he loves two people at the same time and how he’s feeling frustrated by this.
They had a promise to tell each other things, to be frank with each other. But Tae-Oh kept quiet and felt like he could deal with this on his own till the very end. (which is why we have that super dramatic scene of Sun-Woo visiting Da Kyung’s house in Episode 5)
Communication is key in a marriage and in any relationship.
2. For Mothers, they are willing to do anything for their children
One of the scariest scenes to me was when Sun Woo pretended to have accidentally thrown her son down a cliff. She plotted everything out just so she could have her son to herself. It was pure evil, but that’s how much she loved her son.
Another scene in the later episodes where she just marched to Hae Kang’s mother and told her off and even threatening to end her husband’s career for spreading rumours. You go girl!
While these may not be the best ways to show a mother’s love for a child, it certainly brought forth a very universal point: Mothers are willing to do anything for their children.
3. Even the best of friends can betray you
Remember the first episode where we saw our main lead, Sun Woo digging through the car trunk of her husband? She found some photos of her neighbours who went on a trip together with the husband and his affair. We also saw texts from her colleague warning Tae-Oh that Sun Woo might be onto him regarding his affair.
This was where all hell broke loose (and we’re only at episode 1!).
A lesson to all, even the best of friends can betray you and hide things from you. So, before you go around telling everyone your deepest secrets, you may want to think through your circle once again – who are your closest friends? But then again, it’s things like these that make a relationship stronger, right?
4. Importance of Mental Health
Sun-Woo herself has PTSD because of the incident she experienced as a child. Sun-Woo’s mom knew her husband was having an affair as well.
This explains why Sun-Woo was so obsessed with Tae-Oh’s affair. Yoon-Ki once asked whether Sun-Woo got treated for her PTSD as well.
Mental Health is a serious topic and we need to raise awareness on the different spectrum of illnesses.
In the show, Joon-Young was stealing small items of no value and we later found out that he developed signs of Kleptomania. It’s a mental health disorder that can actually cause emotional pain to one’s self and those around them as evidenced by the quarrels surrounding this.
Sun-Woo also mentioned in Episode 14 that if she disappeared, everyone would be happy. This was the first sign the town doctor noticed, and the next day, we found Sun-Woo attempting suicide near the ocean.

5. Don’t be Obsessed with the Past
Tae-Oh moved back to Gosan after being all successful in Seoul, producing a hit movie and all. However, he moved back with ill intentions, wanting to remove Sun-Woo as the vice-director of the hospital. He was still holding onto grudges from the past and wanted Sun-Woo to pay.
It’s not easy to forgive, forget and move on. But we shouldn’t be so obsessed with the past that it becomes our driving force. Tae-Oh had a separate phone just to receive information about Sun-Woo’s life. He was stalking her. Creepy much?
In the wise words of Yoon-Ki, “Whatever it is, can you forget about everything and restart?”
6. Learn to Walk Away from a Toxic Relationship
If your partner abuses you and hits you in a relationship, walk away. We learnt this from Eun-Woo who was constantly abused by her boyfriend. She couldn’t walk away in the beginning but through a series of events, she finally did.
No reason is good enough to make yourself go through all the beatings. Walk away and seek help from professionals.
