We love a business with a clever name. The phrase Yu Zhong Bu Tong means ‘out of the ordinary’ in Chinese, but the business has added a fish element into it, which works perfectly since they sell fish soup using fresh fish from a local farm.
From The Farm To A Table At Wisma Atria’s Food Court
The brand is the first in Singapore to offer locally produced live fresh fish in a food court setting. The fish is transported daily from their fish farm over at Lorong Halus Jetty in Pasir Ris, ensuring optimal freshness.
The local coastal farm operates on renewable energy through solar energy and smart farming techniques, which helps them in being carbon neutral in its operation and sustainable in the long run, which will help the ’30 by 30’ goal to farm and supply local fish for Singapore.
Envisioned as an industrial fish processing HQ, the 54-seater space over at Yu Zhong Bu Tong has a monochromatic palette with textured metal finishes. The staff also wear dark blue jumpsuits which are similar to the waders of the farm!
Yu Zhong Bu Tong Menu
The main menu over at Yu Zhong Bu Tong revolves around fish, with hot-piping soups, fried fish snacks and cold dishes. The soups come in 4 signature flavours, where you can choose your desired add-ons for the soup. Some add-ons include black fungus, mushrooms, glass noodles and vegetables.
Yu Zhong Bu Tong uses sea bass reared on their farm.
Zesty Winter Melon
Before we dug into any of the hearty soups, we tried the Zesty Winter Melon ($3.80) which was an interesting appetizer. Coming in a neon shade of yellow, the snack was refreshing and definitely different from the usual winter melon you find in your soups.
Fried Fresh Fish Bites with Mustard Dips
Instead of a dip, the Fried Fresh Fish Bites with Mustard Dips ($7.80) was tossed in a mustard sauce. The fish nuggets were also made using the fish from their farm and had a tender center. We loved how the fish nugget consisted of actual fish instead of a flour coating.
Fresh Green Mussels with Spicy Sauce
Using green mussels that are harvested and delivered live daily from their farm, this dish featured plump, juicy mussel meat which was cooked to perfection. You can dip it into the chef’s special spicy sauce, but the meat itself was good on its own.
Collagen Fish Soup
The Collagen Fish Soup ($9.80) is the only soup where the add-ons are fixed, so they come with tofu, romaine lettuce and shimeji mushrooms. Boiled from fresh fish bones, fish scales and fish maw for that extra boost of collagen, this was a light and friendly soup with a slightly sweet aftertaste.
The fish was undoubtedly fresh, and oh-so-tender.
Tomato Fish Soup
We didn’t really fancy the Tomato Fish Soup ($9.80) because of its sweetness. There could have been a little more tartness, but this might just be a hit among kids.
Sauerkraut Fish Soup
The Sauerkraut Fish Soup ($9.80) was one of our favourites with an interesting mix of sour and savoury flavours, with a pinch of spiciness from the dried peppercorn.
Spicy Poached Fish Soup
For people who always order Xiao La from a Mala store, the Spicy Poached Fish Soup ($9.80) was way too spicy for us. We can see how lovers of spice will love this, with its invigorating spice-infused chilli oil. Spicy, but will leave you wanting more.
Affordable Bowls of Fresh Fish Soup
While some might find $9.80 for a bowl of fish soup pretty expensive, do remember that you’re getting quality fresh fish! Also, the bowl of soup is rather large, so you can add more ingredients and share it with a friend!
