Known as one of the oldest pizzerias in Naples, L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele is a famous name among pizzerias in the world! They have opened their first store in Singapore at Maxwell, offering an expanded menu of their famous wagon wheel pizzas.
Modern Contemporary Interior
The Restaurant has an open-concept kitchen, which allows diners to have a front-row seat to watch the pizza-making process. You get to watch the chefs shape the dough and put it in their customised domed brick oven!
The warm lighting inside creates an inviting atmosphere, complementing the earthy green and brown furniture, which further elevates the ambiance.
L’antica Pizzeria Da Michele Menu
Besides their classic Neapolitan pizzas, they offer a variety of specialties from Southern Italy.
Begin with appetisers like Zuppa Di Cozze Di Tropea (Mussels, $29) and Saltimbocca Alla Romana (Veal, $28). They even have a homemade pasta selection featuring Lasagna Napoletana ($33) and Linguine Alle Vongole ($35).
For those who prefer sharing, try their Fritto Di Terra (Potato croquette, $24) and Tris Di Montanarine (Fried mini pizza, $22)!
Starters
To start our meal, we enjoyed the Burrata Alla Puttanesca ($26). It featured creamy burrata served with Leccino olives, sun-dried tomatoes, and prized Cetara anchovies. The combination of the robust, savoury anchovies and milky burrata whet our appetites!
The Gambero Rosso Di Mazara ($38) impressed us with the striking red Mediterranean shrimp. They were fresh and tender with a natural sweetness! The simple dressing of extra virgin olive oil enhanced the flavours of the shrimp.
For sharing, we had the Fritto Di Mare ($26), a platter of mixed fried seafood including calamari, prawns and Amalfi coast fin fish. While the calamari stood out for its tender texture, the overall flavour profile was not striking to us. We would have enjoyed a more seasoned batter or dipping sauce!
Pizzas
Their star item is the Margherita ($28), and shocked us by how large it was! It’s topped with tomato sauce and a blend of cheeses including the Agerola Fior di Latte from sheep’s milk and pecorino Romano DOP.
The crust was on the thinner side and couldn’t seem to hold the toppings well which bummed us slightly. However, we enjoyed the chewy texture and slight tang of the dough, complementing the richness of the cheese.
A more savoury option is the Friarielli & Salsiccia ($36), topped with italian sausage and friarielli, a salted broccoli rabe. The friarielli was salty but added a slight bitterness and nuttiness to the pizza which we found unique! It might get overbearing for some, although the sweetness from the tomato sauce balances it out.
There’s also the Cetara ($34) which had Cetara anchovies, Leccino olives and capers. The combination of the three was briney and flavourful but got overbearing after a while.
Pasta
We tried the Orecchiette Alla Positanese ($34), handmade with Martimucci semolina flour. The pasta was on the hard side, maybe from being under or overcooked, but we really liked the rich tomato sauce it came with. The burrata provided a nice creaminess!
Dessert
To cap off our dining experience with something sweet, we tried the Cannoli ($16). The deep-fried shells were crunchy and the ricotta filling wasn’t too sweet. It reminded us of Collon, the popular Japanese snack!
