HaengBokCakeYo is a wordplay of the phrase, Haeng Bok Hae Yo (행복해요) which means ‘Happiness’ in Korean. The dessert shop located in Kampong Bahru joins the family of cafes such as Stranger’s Reunion, Kream & Kensho and Hodunamu.
You can expect Korean-inspired bakes here, such as the popular Fatcarons!
Korean Desserts by Nanatang
HaengBok CakeYo is the latest venture by the people behind Nanatang, a baking studio offering baking workshops in Singapore. You might be familiar with Nanatang as we’ve briefly mentioned them in the past on our Fatcarons in Singapore listicle.
The first floor is home to HaengBokCakeYo, a dessert store that operates on a takeaway basis. The second floor is where all the baking workshops by Nanatang takes place.
HaengBokCakeYo Menu
The takeaway dessert shop has a menu that focuses on sweets and bakes. Apart from the usual macarons, named K-style Fatcarons here, they also sell K-style Fatfatcarons, which are macarons with really thick filling.
They also have Mini Chiffon Cakes, Fruit Shortcakes, Brownies and Cookies.
K-style Fatfatcarons
These colourful Fatfatcarons ($5.80 for 1pc, $19.80 for 4pcs) are unlike your usual macarons. HaengBok CakeYo’s fatfatcarons come in various flavours, such as Double Citron, Blueberry, Orh Nee, Matcha, Strawberry, Oreo Cheesecake and Ondeh Ondeh.
The Matcha Fatfatcaron does not just contain matcha, there was a generous filling of strawberry jam as well. We appreciated the strawberry flavours as they added a nice fruitiness and sourness to the dessert.
K-style Fatcarons
There are currently 6 flavours: Chocolate, Vanilla Bean, Mango, Speculoos, Pistachio and Raspberry. ($3 for 1pc, $15.80 for 6pcs)
We really enjoyed the Pistachio one, which had a nice savoury nuttiness to it.
Chubby Cookies
While the Red Velvet Cookie had a soft texture, we appreciated the Pandan Gula Melaka Cookie’s crumbly and chewy texture more. There are two other flavours available as well, Choco Chips and Double Chocolate. These go for $5.80 a piece or $14.80 for three.
Mini Chiffon Cake
Packed beautifully in a bento box, the Mini Chiffon Cake ($9.80 each) was an accurate description of Korean aesthetics.
The Houjicha flavoured one had a rather dense texture, which we did not expect for a chiffon cake. There’s also a rather strong bitter aftertaste from the Houjicha which we thought could’ve been executed better.
The owner assured us that adjustments will be made in the future for a more airy and tastier version of the cake.
Strawberry Shortcake Slice
The classic strawberry cake ($6.80 per slice) had a nice fluffy texture, paired with light cream and sweet-sour strawberries. We loved how it wasn’t as sweet as the other desserts.
Sharing The Happiness
For the first two weeks of opening, HaengBokCakeYo will be donating 50% of their proceeds to various charities such as the Friends of the Disabled Society and Love Nils.
