Sushi Zushi: Freshly-Made Sushi In Funan From Only $3++, With Chutoro, Uni Ikura Handroll

As big sushi fans, the news of a new sushi spot in Funan caught our attention! Sushi Zushi is the latest opening, offering a plethora of freshly made sushi options from only $3.

Small And Intimate

Counter seat at Sushi Zushi

The restaurant occupies a humble corner of the mall with two main seating sections. It can sit about 30 people in total.

Here you can watch the chefs prepare your sushi fresh before you, served onto your platters!

We observed snaking queues before the restaurant opened for its 5.30pm dinner service. The anticipated wait time was about 1 hour – something to note if you’re looking to try.

Sushi Zushi Menu

Their menu varies based on the fish available during the day. The sushi selection is split into 4 main groups: handrolls, gunkan, aburi and nigiri.

You can check out their full menu online

Handroll

Handrolls are their signature item, with 19 flavours like Salmon Ikura ($4.50), Wagyu ($9) and Hotate with Truffle ($6).

We tried the Negitoro ($4.50), Spicy Tuna ($4.50) and Uni Ikura ($15).

Personally, we felt the first two were underwhelming to us. The Spicy Tuna tasted too strongly of the sauce and the Negitoro didn’t have a striking tuna flavour, although both were generous with their fillings.

The Uni Ikura stood out the most! The uni was creamy and the ikura added a nice saltiness and texture.

Gunkan

The Gunkan selection rotates and you can try options like Bara ($4, mixed cubed fish) and Tuna Mayo ($3).

The Uni Gunkan had an enjoyable creaminess and no fishy smell, though we felt it didn’t have the usual sweetness of uni.

The Negitoro ($4) was generous with the minced tuna but was a bit icy!

Nigiri

The Nigiri impressed us the most!

Our favourite was the Aburi Mentai Salmon ($4.50). The salmon belly was fatty and rich, tender from the aburi. The regular Salmon Belly ($4.50) was good as well!

Left to right: Otoro Nigiri, Chutoro Nigiri, Salmon Belly Nigiri

Their tuna selection is also worth a shoutout. The Otoro ($12) had a pleasant butteriness, while the Chutoro ($9) was clean-tasting.

We also had the Tuna Tataki ($7) with a lightly seared outside. The citrus topping added a nice touch but the fish flavour didn’t stand out to us.

Sashimi

Back to front: Negitoro Gunkan, Chutoro, Mekajiki

They have sashimi and sushi sets that are good for sharing. The cheapest sashimi like Tai and Teriyaki Saba start from $3, while a standard Sushi & Sashimi Set is $22 for about 6 total pieces.

We recommend the Scallop ($8) and Red Prawn ($5), both sweet with a nice bouncy texture!

Their Chuotoro ($15) and Mekajiki ($3, swordfish) sashimi were also fresh, boasting a nice colour and clean finish.

Sushi In City Hall

Sushi Zushi provides a value-for-money sushi experience. The fish selection was not exceptionally premium but fresh and of good quality! We think it’s worth a try but may not be worth queueing.
