Mondo: Moody Artisanal Gelato Bar In Telok Ayer With Flavours Like Blue Cheese & Pear

Frozen desserts seem to be all the rage now, especially with the openings of Messina Gelato and Yo-Chi (granted, they sell frozen yoghurt) in Singapore. Mondo is the newest entry to Telok Ayer, specialising in house-churned gelatos in a rotational menu of bold, unique flavours.

Moody Retro Aesthetic

Mondo gelato in Telok Ayer

At first glance, Mondo doesn’t look like a gelato store.

It presents like a 1960s bar, with its dark maroon palette, retro golden decor and curved cushion seating.

The store is open until 12 am on Fridays and Saturdays, a compelling dessert option for that post-drink pick-me-up.

Our only comment would be that the seats are too narrow, but we understand that’s going to improve soon!

Mondo Gelato Menu

There are about 10 gelato flavours available daily, but the selection may change depending on the availability and quality of ingredients on that day.

All flavours are priced at $7 for a Single scoop, $10 for a double and $12 for a triple.

The lineup has some unique profiles, including Toasted White Choc & Strawberry; Masala, Figs & Port and Blue Cheese & Candied Pear.

Top: Blue Cheese & Candied Pear, Bottom: Toasted White Choc & Strawberry

While it sounds funky, the Blue Cheese & Candied Pear took us by surprise! It had a subtle saltiness and umami that was rounded out by the sweetness of the pear.

Every flavour is made with only fresh fruit and no shortcuts (no artificial flavours, no added colouring), so you can taste the true blue flavour of the ingredients.

It’s good quality gelato. Creamy, not too sweet, with a natural taste, making it satisfying and almost addictive.

Top: Pistachio, Bottom: Chocolate Valrhona 61%

Some mainstays are the Piedmont Hazelnut, Valhorna Chocolate (61%) and Sicilian Pistachio.

These were just as good and did not skimp on the ingredients, concentrated with the familiar flavours.

They also offer sorbets for a dairy-free option, with flavours like Passionfruit and Soursop. There are even boozy options, including Pineapple Makgeolli and Lemon Sake.

If you’re into fresh, zesty flavours, these are the perfect choice! The boozy flavours were well-executed too, with the taste but not the unpleasant bitterness after.

Drinks

They also have drinks on tap, including filter coffee from ONA Coffee ($7.50) and an Earl Grey iced tea with Pear syrup ($7.50). The coffee was surprisingly good!

We hear that they will soon offer cocktails on tap in the coming weeks, too! Select sorbet and cocktail pairings will also be available.
