Jay Chou’s Favourite BBT – Machi Machi Opens in Singapore at 25 Arab Street

Does anyone know the exact number of BBT brands we have in Singapore? As the never-dying bubble tea trend continues to grow, the latest brand to hit our sunny shores is none other than Jay Chou’s favourite brand – Machi Machi.

The brand is named after Chou’s wife’s dog – Machi. The Mandopop King himself is also often seen patronizing the store alongside other well-known figures such as local powerhouse JJ Lin and Taiwanese Band Mayday’s lead singer, Ashin.

The bubble tea brand was also seen in Jay Chou’s latest MV – Won’t Cry (说好不哭) and during the brand’s pop-up opening at The Bund in Shanghai, the originally 13-32 yuan drink was sold for nearly 300 yuan by scalpers.

Of Cheese Teas and Panna Cottas

Singapore is surprisingly not one of the first few countries to get a Machi Machi outlet. The brand has outlets all over the world such as Japan, Korea, France, Australia, Canada, Sweden and London.

The brand is famous for its cheese teas, with netizens dubbing it ‘the God of Cheese Tea.’ This isn’t surprising judging from the photos we saw online. The drink is topped with a thick layer of cheese foam and torched to a perfect golden Crème Brulee brown.

No Seats? No Problem

They are reportedly no seats here at the newly opened outlet in Arab Street. Well, you’ll be glad to know that the hot favourites – the Black Milk Tea with Panna Cotta and the Fresh Strawberry Latte with Panna Cotta are packaged in super Instagrammable bottles, perfect for takeaways and drinking on-the-go.

There is also the classic “I love you so machi” wall here at the Arab Street outlet, making it the perfect backdrop for your photos.

As we expect the lines to be especially long for at least a couple of days here in Singapore, we managed to visit Seoul’s Machi Machi and got first hands on the hot favourites.

Even at the Seoul outlet, the wait for Machi Machi was surprisingly long, with foreigners and tourists forming the majority of the crowd.

Taste Verdict: Black Milk Tea with Panna Cotta

This is one of Jay Chou’s favourite milk teas, and we can see the reason why. The milk tea is strong and fragrant, not artificial tasting at all. The Singapore outlet is selling this for $7.50, which is a decent price for anyone who decides to treat themselves.

Taste Verdict: Fresh Strawberry Latte with Panna Cotta

The Fresh Strawberry Latte with Panna Cotta is slightly more expensive, retailing at a price of $8.50. This drink bears resemblance to Strawberry Milk, however, Machi Machi’s version seemed to be more luxurious and creamier. Paired with the Panna Cotta, it’s a wonderfully creamy and milky combination.

Make sure to try the Strawberry Latte by itself before trying it together with the Panna Cotta.

As we all know, Strawberries are extremely juicy and delicious in Korea, especially during winter. We’re unsure if the Korea outlet used locally harvested strawberries, but hopefully, the Singapore outlet will use fresh strawberries similar to the ones we had in Korea.

Machi Machi Opening on Jay Chou’s Birthday

The Singapore Machi Machi outlet is opening on the 18th of Jan, Saturday 11 am at 25 Arab Street. Make sure you’re mentally prepared to queue for your drinks before heading down.
