Joo Chiat Oyster House: Fresh Japanese Oysters And Specialty Cocktails In The East

Joining the exciting food scene in Joo Chiat is Joo Chiat Oyster House, a new restaurant from the team behind King’s Cart Coffee. This new concept is focused on fresh oysters, seafood and artisanal cocktails!

Stylish And Modern Bar

The restaurant has a darker aesthetic – literally. The space is illuminated only by coloured neon lights and table lamps.

It also features a sleek open bar and kitchen. You can choose to sit at the bar to catch the chefs preparing your meals for you!

Despite the red lights and the all-black furniture, the space was still quite cosy and vibey. There’s a retro sign outside the restaurant that’s also perfect for pictures.

Joo Chiat Oyster House Menu

The menu is largely seafood-centric, with a focus on variations of their fresh Japanese oysters. You can enjoy their oysters both cooked and raw with sauces like Salsa and Yuzu Foam, per piece (from $3.50) or by the dozen.

Tapas options include the Har Cheong Gai Chicken Loli ($14) and Roasted Curried Cauliflower ($10). They also offer mains like 8 Hour Braised Beef ($26) and Katong Laksa Fish & Chips ($21)

They also have an extensive menu of alcoholic drinks, including cocktails like the classic Singapore Sling ($22), the Cold Brew Highball ($22) and the fruity ($22). There are also wines, local craft beers, gin and more.

Flavoured Oysters

The opening dish was a platter of Flavoured Oysters ($3.90 per piece) served raw with three different sauces.

The oysters are sourced from Hyogo, Japan and were of a good size! Chimichurri was a favourite of ours, with a savoury herby flavour that paired well with the briny oysters.

We also tried the
Red Wine Mignon, with a pleasant tang from the vinegar and crunch from the minced red onions without being too punchy.

If you’re into the seafood flavour, try the Ikura!

Baked Oysters

Their Baked Oysters ($4.90 per piece) are a great option if you’re not keen on the raw versions.

The Miso Butter is a must-try, torched tableside before serving. The umami from the miso and richness from the butter makes for a satisfying mouthful!

A unique one is the Garlic Chilli. It was topped with chilli crisp but didn’t overwhelm the flavour of the oyster. There was the right amount of spice and garlic for a nice kick.

Their Mentaiko is worth a try for mentaiko fans – it was creamy with saltiness from the roe and did not have an artificial taste.

Portobello Mushroom Aglio Olio

For a hearty pasta dish, try the Portobello Mushroom Aglio Olio ($21). The pasta was done al dente with a firm texture, coated with the familiar garlicky flavour.

The mushrooms and tomatoes added pleasant umami with each bite!

Tapas

The Tapas plates are a great sharing option. We tried Blur Like Sotong ($14), crispy fried squid fritters with a kaffir lime mayo.

The mayo was the definite star of this dish, with the recognisable citrusy flavour of the lime adding a great fragrance to the dip!

There’s also Charred Broccoli ($10), which was crisp and full of smokey flavours; and the Tako Romesco ($14) with a bright capsicum pistachio sauce.

The Chilli Crab Mantou ($16) is also worth a mention, served with a classic chilli crab dip full of fresh crab meat.

Cocktails

Our highlights of the night were definitely the cocktails! Each drink is crafted by the in-house mixology team and features unique twists on familiar flavours.

The East Coast Plan ($22) mixes gin, lime and prosecco for a refreshing, zesty finish that isn’t too strong.

For a slightly spiced flavour, try Auntry Rosalyn ($22). It’s deceptively easy to drink despite its vodka base, thanks to the many layers of sweet aromatics including lemongrass and galangal.

Solero ($20) is inspired by everyone’s favourite ice cream of the same name. The drink features notes of coconut, cream and lime finished with soda water. We think they nailed the Solero flavour pretty close!
