HUE: Modern Thai Restaurant In Lavender With Bar Bites & Cocktail Inspired By BLACKPINK’S LISA

Located in the neighbourhood of Lavender, HUE is a stylish modern Thai restaurant serving a new menu of Thai-inspired cocktails and bites! Hue means hungry in Thai, a playful double-meaning perfect for the concept of the space.

Stylish Interior

The interior has a mix of modern industrial and resort-style design, with concrete floors and rattan accent chairs. It’s decorated with a dried flower chandelier and textured wall pieces.

True to its name, there’s a touch of colour in the walls and neon lights! There’s also outdoor seating for an alfresco experience.

HUE Menu

The new menu has a selection of 9 cocktails, all infusing familiar Thai flavours. Options include the spicy Tom Yum ($18) with fish sauce and Thai tom yum powder; or the fruity Passionista ($18) made using rum, passionfruit and prosecco.

Their bar bites menu also includes Thai flavours like the HUE Nachos ($16) topped with Thai chilli sauce and galangal. There’s also the Chicken Nest ($20) with fried chicken wings in a duo-seasoning combo and Thai Thai Fries ($13)  served with three sauces.

Char Moo

The Char Moo ($17) skewers are a homage to Moo Ping, served glazed in a Thai chilli sauce. It was smokey, tender and complex with a strong umami from the seasoning.

We enjoyed the slight crisp and caramelization from the sugars in the sauce, cut through by the slightly vinegary dipping sauce.

Thai Thai Fries

Served with a trio of Thai dipping sauces, the Thai Thai Fries ($13) were coated in a tangy tom yum seasoning. These were crisp on the outside and fluffy inside, with an addictive savouriness!

Our favourite of the three sauces was the culantro mint dressing, but the cilantro aioli and marpranom chilli aioli are equally tasty.

Mama Mia

Mama Mia ($22) is HUE’s iteration of the famous Jeh O’ Chula Tom Yum MAMA Noodles. Instead of the thick tom yum base, they feature a clear broth and a generous portion of seafood.

The broth itself is robust and well-balanced between sour and spicy, complementing the familiar mama noodles. The egg yolk also added more creaminess and mellowed out the soup!

Egg-e-egg-egg

The name is a tongue twister and the Egg-e-egg-egg ($19) is no simple dish! It’s a quail egg Scotch Egg with a laksa-seasoned pork mince. Right before serving, it’s smoked with applewood for an extra sensory experience.

The savoury meat mixture paired well with the creaminess from the quail egg, although we think the meat mixture could be slighter thinner to balance the bite. We also liked the tang from the lime aioli.

Chicken Nest

Chicken Nest ($20) features fried chicken two ways – in a Thai herb seasoning and spicy, tangy chilli aioli. The wings were crunchy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

The herb seasoning had a unique slightly bitter taste but a savoury fragrance, but we found the chilli aioli did not have a standout flavour. Regardless, the wings were sizeable and the crunchy popiah pieces were a nice touch.

Prawn Me Softly

Prawn Me Softly ($21) featured three deep-fried soft-shell prawns, dusted in Thai bomba seasoning. We enjoyed being able to eat the whole prawn, which had good meatiness and sweetness.

Three Little Pigs

It’s not on the bar bites menu but Three Little Pigs ($22) is recommended by HUE. The dish features crispy pork belly chunks sauteed in garlic, coriander and chilli.

This was easy to eat despite the fatty pieces, with the spice and aromatics helping to cut through the fat!

Cocktails

We tried two cocktails from their drinks menu: LaLisa ($18) and Bubble Pop! ($18).

The LaLisa ($18) is named after LISA of BLACKPINK, and aptly encompasses her energy in a sparkly pink drink. It’s made with raspberry syrup and cranberry juice for a sweet and slightly tangy flavour, making it super easy to drink despite its vodka base.

Bubble Pop! ($18) is served with a scented smoke bubble you can pop before you drink. The base is spiced rum, mellowed with lemongrass and ginger. This was also sweet but spicy, making for a unique flavour combination.
