Two iconic Japanese food brands are having an exclusive tie-up! Genki Sushi and Calbee have launched a series of menu items that feature Calbee’s Jagabee potato sticks and Hot & Spicy Potato Chips. Running from today till 20th November 2022, the menu items are available at all Genki Sushi outlets.
Maki Sushi With Spicy Topping
The sushi menu includes a series of maki rolls topped with Calbee Hot & Spicy Potato Chips. You can choose from the Lobster Salad Maki ($4.80), Crispy Ebi Fry Maki ($4.80) and Crispy Teriyaki Chicken Maki ($4.80), all served in a cute themed box and covered in crushed chips.
The Crispy Teriyaki Chicken and Lobster Salad Maki were more memorable as the flavours blended well with the salty, spicy potato chips. We felt that the Crispy Ebi Fry could use more seasoning, but nonetheless it was a generous serving – it came with a whole tempura Ebi, including the head! The crushed chips make the dishes a bit hard to eat but if you’re a fan of the chips you can enjoy them throughout your meal.
Sides With Jagabee Potato Sides
The collaboration menu also has sides that feature different flavours of Jagabee Potato Sticks. The first, Tori Nanban Jagabee Crunch ($6.80) comes with a bed of Honey Butter Jagabee Potato Sticks – their newest flavour! – topped with pieces of seasoned fried chicken and a creamy Nanban sauce. There’s also the Mentai Ebi Jagabee Crunch ($6.80), and Takoyaki Jagabee Crunch ($5.50) with the Original and BBQ flavours respectively.
There was a lot of thought put into the pairings and they were well-executed. The Takoyaki was the most notable taste-wise with the smoky and savoury flavours, while the Mentai Ebi was the most interesting, with pieces of fried shrimp and the signature Genki Sushi mentai mayo sauce.
Savoury & Sweet: Soft Cream Jagabee
It’s a unique pairing that might split the crowd, but there’s also an ice cream and Jagabee Potato Chip dessert! You can choose between a Hokkaido Milk Vanilla or Matcha soft serve for the Soft Cream Jagabee ($5.90) that rests upon a bed of Honey Butter and Original Jagabee Potato Sticks respectively.
If you’re a fan of sweet and salty together, this will suit your taste buds. The ice cream itself is creamy and sweet, adding a nice texture contrast to the crunchy potato sticks. If you do try it, let us know which flavour of ice cream you prefer!
All in all, the collaboration menu between Genki Sushi and Calbee is novel but deliberate, and you can taste the design put behind each item beyond just a scattering of potato chips. It’s worth a try!
