Customize Your Own Keyboard at The Laboratory by RF Located in Cathay Cineleisure

It’s been years since I stepped into Cathay Cineleisure, but I would’ve never expected the reason for my return to Cathay. To customize my own keyboard! The Laboratory by RF, located on the second floor of Cathay Cineleisure offers customers a chance to build their own keyboards.

I know of the hype behind customization, but I’ve never tried it. Sure, the idea of having my very own keyboard excites the hidden geek in me, but I have never known where to start.

Luckily for me, The Laboratory by RF made things easy with their store’s layout. It’s neatly divided into various stations.

Firstly, I had to choose a base. Here, I had to make many decisions, such as the material of my base and the colour. It took me a while to decide between one with a volume knob, or one with a cute tiny LCD screen where I could customize the GIFs that appeared on it.

There were also other considerations, like if I wanted a larger keyboard with more keys, or something simple.

Moving on, the switches. Here’s where I got to decide my typing experience. Do I want something that makes a lot of nice, or something that’s more low-key and silent?

The fun part comes when choosing the keycaps. There’s a wide range of colours, shapes, and materials to choose from. I even learned from the helpful staff here that there are different heights for the keycaps as well! These factors, along with material and shape contribute to the feel of the overall keyboard.

There were even options for languages like Korean and Japanese!

Once everything had been decided, I moved to one of their tables and started to assemble my keyboard! It was surprisingly easy and therapeutic. I even got to test the keys out, and “troubleshoot” some keys that weren’t working.

I think this entire process was straightforward, and it kind of feels like I was building something with LEGOs. It’s not a stressful activity, and I heard some customers even took a few days to finish building their own keyboard just to really be sure of what they wanted.
