Pottery may sound intimidating for some, but you need not be afraid here at the School of Clay Arts. The studio offers a foundation ceramic class for beginners so you can get acquainted with the works of pottery-making.

Instead of jumping straight to the pottery wheel (which is actually harder to control than it seems), the Intro to Pottery Class ($98/pax) is all about hand-building techniques. In the 2.5 hour session, you’ll get to learn about the pinch, coil building and slab building techniques that will come in handy to create aesthetic tableware.

Want to further your understanding of pottery? The studio also offers Pottery Fundamentals: Hand-building ($280/pax) and An Introduction To Throwing On The Potter’s Wheel ($290/pax) classes.

Go all out with your creativity at the One-Day Pottery Workshop ($90/pax) where you not only get to learn basic hand building techniques but also work on the wheel.

While the cost of the workshop may seem a little pricey, it’s all for a good cause. Part of the proceeds goes into funding the free monthly workshops for injured migrant workers – how meaningful!

4. Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle

Pottery is more than just wet clay and the wheel. The kiln where the pieces are fired is also essential to the whole process. Take the dragon kiln at Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle as an example.

Built in the 1940s, the dragon kiln is one of the last of its kind in Singapore. This massive kiln is built from bricks and uses a wood firing technique where the pieces are engulfed in fire. As a result, the ashes react with the pottery glaze and create unpredictable colours and textures that cannot be achieved through gas or electric kilns.

Pay a visit to this pottery paradise to witness the historical kiln in its true glory! And while you’re there, be sure to sign up for Thow Kwang Pottery Jungle’s numerous workshops. Think Paw-Stamping Workshops with ceramics imprinted with your pet’s pawprint and the Trial’s Potter’s Wheel Workshop.
