The Viral Japanese Okashi Gaku Cake-In-A-Can Is Finally Coming To Singapore

Yes, you read that right! The wildly viral Okashi Gaku Japanese Cake-In-A-Can will be finally available for purchase in Singapore from 16 September 2022 with a vending machine situated in Suntec City and an exciting selection of flavours.

Portable Japanese-Style Chiffon Canned Cakes

For those who aren’t familiar with the craze, Okashi Gaku is the brainchild of GAKU, a restaurant chain from Hokkaido, Japan that is famous for its parfaits and risotto. Their cakes garnered online buzz for their visually appealing design and quality taste, so it naturally generated a lot of hype when news came out that it would be available here.

The cakes are housed in a white 24-hour vending machine strategically placed outside the Eat At Seven restaurant street. Under the white lights, the cakes looked alluring, boasting bright circles of fresh fruit, jellies, and whipped cream. The vending machine accepts all cashless payment methods including debit cards, Paywave and PayNow, making it super convenient.

Clockwise from top left: Strawberry Shortcake, Tiramisu, Matcha and Mango & Chocolate

There are 3 types of cake cans available: Shortcake Cans, featuring the Strawberry Shortcake ($11.80) with layers of chiffon, whipped cream, and fresh strawberries; Fuwa Cans (ranging from $8.80 to $9.80) with fresh cream, fruit jelly, puree and jam; and the Egg Pudding Cans ($5.80), a metal can that encloses a rich egg pudding!

We tried the Strawberry Shortcake, Mango & Chocolate ($9.80), Tiramisu ($8.80), and Matcha ($8.80) from the Fuwa collection.

Soft, Sweet And Satisfying

The transparent cans showcased the cakes in their full glory with layers of chiffon, cream, and fruit. Each can comes with a spoon, so you don’t need to worry about the mess.

The signature Strawberry Shortcake was light and fresh, with a generous serving of whipped cream. There was a hidden layer of strawberry jam that added a tartness that balanced out the sweetness of the chiffon! This was a great relief from the heat when eaten slightly chilled.

The Tiramisu was a personal favourite! The coffee was infused into the chiffon and cream but was not too overpowering, and went well with the mellow cream. There were also chocolate chips to add a slight crunch, on top of the circles of charcoal coffee jelly! Each bite was satisfying and a great homage to the classic Italian dessert.

Two of three Singapore-exclusive Fuwa Can flavours! Left: Mango & Chocolate, Right: Matcha

There are also two other Singapore-exclusive flavours besides the Tiramisu, which are Matcha and Mango & Chocolate. If you prefer fruit flavours, you can try the Strawberry Fuwa Can ($9.80) or the Mango & Passionfruit Fuwa Can ($9.80), each boasting circles of fruit jelly, whipped cream, and a crunchy crust. All the cakes will be dispensed partially frozen, so we highly recommend letting them defrost for about an hour for the best eating experience. They can also keep up to one week in the refrigerator, so you can definitely buy some and store them at home for later!

From what we’ve learned, the vending machines will be refilled about once a week, and they have plans to expand the vending machines to other parts of the island, so stay tuned for their expansion!
