Makgeolli is a popular alcohol in South Korea and is a perfect combination with pan-fried jeon on a rainy day. The drink comes in various flavours as well, with most of it being fruit-based, such as grape, banana and peach.

The more popular (and common) one would probably be chestnut.

However, thanks to Sulbing and Bohae Brewery coming together, there is now a new flavoured makgeolli in South Korea: Injeolmi Makgeolli.

Named 설빙인절미막걸리 in Korean, the drink is only available in Homeplus outlets in Korea and is priced at 2,190won per bottle. (For those in Korea right now, lucky you!)

With reviews online raving about how the injeolmi flavour immediately captures your attention the moment the bottle is opened, to those saying the flavour is a nice balance of rice wine and soybean powder – we can’t wait to head to South Korea and try this for ourselves!

The drink is said to be popular amongst the Grandma Millennial Generation or 할매니얼 in Korean (pronounced halmae-ni-el). The term is formed by bringing a dialect term for grandma in Korean (halmae) together with the word ‘Millennial’.

In Korea, this particular generation is comprised of those who like the taste and fashion sense of grandmothers – which includes flavours like mugwort, black sesame and injeolmi. They also like recreating looks from patterns commonly seen on grandmas as well.

Will you try Injeolmi Makgeolli the next time you’re in Korea?
