Yang Ming Seafood has made a name for itself with its selection of unique live seafood zi char dishes. After two outlets in Ubi and Bishan, they have a third space in VivoCity!
Nostalgic Kelong-Inspired Interior
The outlet has been transformed into an old-school kelong (old-school wooden fish farm)!
There’s great attention to detail, with props like a faded fishing farm sign, fishing nets, and even LED screens that play videos of schools of fish on the floor.
The restaurant entryway showcases tanks full of live fish, lobster and prawns.
The large seating area has fish nets on the ceiling and colourful wooden panels, plus a nice view of the water by Harbourfront.
There are four private rooms that can sit 10 pax (min. spend $800) or 12 pax (min. spend $1000), both decorated in a fun retro design.
Yang Ming Seafood VivoCity Menu
The menu is similar to their other outlets with a few VivoCity-exclusive dishes! They offer over 100 ways to prepare their seafood, ranging from lobster to prawn to 10 types of fish.
The outlet-exclusive items feature both seafood and meat. There’s the Milky Sea Prawn (from $28), Basil Sauce Crab (seasonal price), alongside the Stir Fried Wagyu Cubes (from $38) and Charcoal Grilled Steak (market price).
Their regular menu is expansive. Some options include their signature Andrew Lobster (seasonal price), Salt & Pepper Live Prawn (from $28), BBQ Squid (from $25) and Hong Kong Style Red Grouper (seasonal price).
Their other dishes range from other meats including beef and pork, to tofu, vegetables and noodles. There are items like Char Siew Fried Rice (from $15), Special Ginger Kampung Chicken (from $25) and Crab Meat Charcoal Tofu (from $28).
This outlet even boasts a wine cellar with options from $29. Corkage is also free for all dine-in guests. You’ll be spoilt for choice here!
Chicken Broth With Baby Cabbage
The Chicken Broth With Baby Cabbage ($88/portion) was packed with collagen, creating a thick and flavourful broth.
There was a prominent sweetness from the cabbage and umami from the chicken which made it appetizing; a good start to the meal!
Fragrant Crispy Rice Crab
Our favourite dish was the Fragrant Crispy Rice Crab. This preparation is available for Sri Lankan Crab ($11/100g) or Indonesian Crab ($10/100g) and we recommend the Sri Lankan for a meatier bite.
The seasoning was savoury and addictive – almost like potato chip seasoning – coating every crevice of the crab. The puffed rice was also perfect for snacking!
Basil Sauce Prawn
Another memorable choice is the Basil Sauce Prawn (from $28). The prawns were fresh, sweet and succulent, drenched in a coconut gravy that tasted similar to Thai green curry.
It was served on a bed of chewy sweet potato noodles that soaked up the sauce!
Braised Whole Tripe & Brisket
The Braised Whole Tripe & Brisket ($108) looked interesting, with the tripe coated in gravy. It was then cut open to reveal tender brisket and radish chunks.
The tripe had an enjoyable chewy texture but was not gamey, soaking in the rich gravy like a sponge. We liked that it was spicy to cut through the meatiness!
Dry Braised Pork Ribs
If you like black bean pork ribs in dim sum, you’ll enjoy the Dry Braised Pork Ribs (from $20). This was a dry-fried version with chunks of fatty meat and crisp edges from the frying.
It was savoury but not salty from the black bean sauce, a great accompaniment for rice.
Claypot Fried Dace Fish Kai Lan
The Claypot Fried Dace Fish Kai Lan (from $18) was equal parts saucy, salty and crunchy from the vegetables. The minced meat and fish bits added a pleasant meatiness to the dish.
Signature Dishes
Their repertoire of signature dishes are just as good, like the Crab Stewed Bee Hoon (market price).
The Minced Garlic Steamed Clam (market price) were meaty and packed with garlic, with an enjoyable sweetness from the shellfish.
