The Gogijip Review: Ganjang Gejang (Soy Marinated Raw Crabs) and Black Pork Belly in Tanjong Pagar

The Gogijip is situated along Tanjong Pagar Road where you can find popular Korean restaurants such as On Dol and Obba Jjajang. The Korean restaurant is known for its quality Iberico Pork and Black Pork as well as a rare Korean dish in Singapore – Ganjang Gejang (Soy Marinated Raw Crabs).

What is Ganjang Gejang?

Ganjang Gejang in Singapore with lots of other side dishes

For those who are unfamiliar with Ganjang Gejang, it is basically raw crabs marinated in soy sauce. The dish is quite popular in South Korea, with lots of Mukbang videos featuring this particular dish.

Usually in Korea, Ganjang Gejang is made using kkotge (꽃게) which can be directly translated to flower crab.

The process involves cleaning the crabs and salting them, before pouring a soy sauce-based mixture and marinating it. The marinade is removed, boiled, and poured back in. This process goes on for about a couple more times before the dish is chilled and ready to serve.

Where To Find Ganjang Gejang in Singapore?

While the dish might not be as popular as Jjajangmyeon in Singapore, there are a couple of places that sell it. One of those places is The Gogijip. Besides Ganjang Gejang, The Gogijip also sells Yangnyeom Gejang, which is spicy marinated raw crabs.

The Gogijip Menu at Tanjong Pagar

Besides Ganjang Gejang, the Gogijip is ultimately a charcoal Korean BBQ restaurant with many more dishes to offer.

They serve Iberico Pork and Black Pork, which are two high-quality types of pork.

Besides that, you can also find Daechang (Beef Large Intestines), Yuk Hoe (Korean Beef Tartare) and ala carte menu items like Galbitang, Gamjatang and Budaejjigae.

Ganjang Gejang

The dish usually costs $55 but they have a Soy Marinated Crab set for 1 during lunch, which only costs $25 and comes with side dishes and a bowl of rice.

Rice is a must when eating Ganjang Gejang!

The dish is served with a sprinkle of chopped chilli padi and a hefty amount of soy sauce.

We had high expectations for the soy marinated raw crabs, but sadly we found the crabs a little on the fishy side. The raw flavour is very prominent, and some might even find it too strong.

Thankfully, the chilli padi and soy sauce marinade does help reduce the fishiness. The texture of the crab was great though.

Make sure to mix some rice with the soy sauce marinade and some of the roe and tomalley in the crab shell.

Yangnyeom Gejang

Surprisingly, we favoured the Yangnyeom Gejang over the Ganjang Gejang at The Gogijip.

Perhaps it was the spicy marinade, but the spicy marinated raw crabs had little to no fishy taste as compared to the soy sauce counterpart.

It’s quite spicy, so we would recommend eating this with rice as well. The texture of the crab meat was plump and juicy which we really enjoyed.

Yangnyeom Dwaeji Galbi

While we were there, we also had the Marinated Pork Ribs Lunch Set which came with a plate of pre-grilled marinated pork ribs and side dishes like mini potato and zucchini pancakes.

As expected of a Korean BBQ restaurant, the pork ribs were delicious, juicy and had a nice, charred flavour.

The side dishes were also of good quality, and we especially loved the sugar-coated sweet potatoes that almost had the texture of tang hu lu. The crunch around the sweet potato was so satisfying.

The Gogijip Pork Set

We also visited during dinner service previously to try out the Pork Set ($94) which comes with 180g of Iberico Pork Collar, 180g of Black Pork Belly, and 180g Iberico Pork Jowl.

According to the menu, the set is good for 2-3 pax. However, we think it’s just nice for 2.

It includes a choice of soybean paste stew or kimchi stew, steamed egg, free flow side dishes and fresh vegetables.

The pork at The Gogijip that was grilled over charcoal fire was really juicy and bursting with flavours. The Iberico Pork Jowl even had sort of a crunchy texture to it!
