Eat Till Your Tastebuds Are Numb At This Modern Sichuan Restaurant In Marina One: Numb Restaurant

If you enjoy Sichuan food, you’ll enjoy this new restaurant concept in Marina One! The founders of Chengdu Restaurant and Chengdu Bowl have launched a new concept aptly named Numb Restaurant, specialising in modern Sichuan food that features the special ‘numbing’ sensation.

Stylish But Cosy interior

The restaurant is located in Marina One West Tower with a noticeable sign. The interior is clean and chic, with rattan and wood accent furniture to liven the space. There’s also an open bar where they sell beer on tap.

There are also private rooms available that sit up to 10 pax, perfect for private meals or business meetings.

Numb Restaurant Menu

The menu consists of both spicy and non-spicy options, including classic Sichuan dishes like Classic Chengdu Seabass In Sour Picked Soup ($39.80 for Small, $49.80 for Large), Kung Pao Tiger Prawns ($34.80) and even Finger Licking Good Mala Fragrant Crab ($88.80).

There’s also a selection called ‘Sichuan Tapas’ like Numb Numb Truffle Fries ($15.80) and Numb Mouth-Watering Spicy Chicken ($18.80), designed to pair with their extensive alcohol menu. Choose from drinks like Craft Beers from Brewlander, red wine and sparkling wine.

Awesome Spicy Chilli Chicken With Fried Dough Twist

A Sichuan classic is the La Zi Ji, or Numb’s Awesome Spicy Chilli Chicken With Fried Dough Twist ($30.80 for Small, $40.80 for Large). The dish came with morsels of chicken that were crispy but still tender inside!

The spice was tolerable for us and had a great savoury flavour which was quite addictive. If you prefer it spicier, you can adjust the spice levels when you order in-store.

Sichuan-Inspired Traditional Homemade Mapo Tofu

Another Sichuan classic is the Sichuan-Inspired Traditional Homemade Mapo Tofu ($24.80), served hot in a metal pot. This would pair perfectly with rice as the thick gravy was packed with meat. The tofu had a great texture and kept its shape, acting as a good medium for the sauce. We think the sauce could have been slightly spicier for a bigger kick!

Applewood Smoked Crispy Chicken

A signature dish of Numb Restaurant is the Applewood Smoked Crispy Chicken ($33.80), which features a grand entrance in a dome of Applewood smoke.

The fragrance added to the eating experience as it whet our appetites! The dish comes with cubes of chicken thigh, peanuts and tempeh, making for an interesting mouthfeel. Everything was seasoned with a savoury, smoky aftertaste that was quite unique.

Mala Broth Boiled Seabass

The Mala Broth Boiled Seabass ($39.80 for Small, $49.80 for Large) came with large pieces of tender fish in the familiar spicy broth that was spicy enough to stimulate our tastebuds. The seabass was fresh and had a slightly bouncy texture.

Champion Beef And Mixed Veggies in Golden Spicy Sour Soup

The Champion Beef And Mixed Veggies in Golden Spicy Sour Soup ($39.80 for Small, $49.80 for Large) with generous servings of fatty beef and enoki mushrooms.  Those who enjoy fatty meat will enjoy the clean flavour of the beef, balanced by the sourness of the soup.

Sweet and Sour Pork Fruit Platter On Ice

Served on an ornate platter of ice and colourful fruits is Sweet and Sour Pork Fruit Platter On Ice ($32.80). You might find it a bit weird that this dish is served cold, but this is done to make the meat more crispy – and we found that there was a difference in the texture! The sauce is fruity and sweet and the pork chunks retained their tenderness with the crunchy exterior.

Appetizers & Bar Snacks

The sides were just as varied as the mains, starting with the unique Mashed Pepper with Century Egg and Eggplants ($13.80). This was served in a wooden bowl and mashed with a mortar to incorporate everything together. The resulting mixture was a combination of creamy, spicy and smoky, making for a great appetizer!

Other classics include the Sliced Pork Belly with Classic Garlic and Chilli Sauce ($18.80) and Imperial Sauced Sliced Beef ($23.80) that’s available Braised or Numbing & Spicy. They also have Succulent Fried Chicken Wings with Special Handmade Chips ($19.80) that came with juicy chicken wings and seasoned crisp potato chips. We especially enjoyed the chips as they had an addictive spice and airy texture.

Desserts

To cool off after the meal, you can choose from their dessert selection. The Pumpkin Pancake ($9.80 for 6 pieces) features fried mochi balls with a pleasant chewy texture and sweet taste.

There’s also the cool Osmanthus Coconut Cake ($8.80 for 4 pieces) and the Fancy Rainbow Ice Jelly with Glutinous Rice Balls ($10.80). As the name suggests, this dessert came with a colourful variety of toppings like hawthorn candy, raising and watermelon garnishing a chilled jelly base.
