Fans of Taiwanese Night Markets rejoice! Apollo Entertainment and team has brought more than 30 stalls from Ningxia Night Market right here to Singapore. This is part of the critically acclaimed touring Taiwan Food Festival (士林嘉年华) which is here in Singapore for the first time ever.
When and Where?
Running from 16 Jan to 9 Feb, you can expect authentic Taiwanese cuisine prepared by the original chefs and stall vendors.
There are various ways of getting to the Asian Night Market, which is being held at Sentosa, Siloso Point.
- Board the FREE beach tram from Beach Station towards Siloso Point.
- Make full use of the FREE shuttle buses at Beach Station. However, do note that shuttle buses are only available from Friday to Sunday.
- Walk from Beach Station to Siloso Point.
The entire night market is split into two zones. Zone 1 has a beautiful backdrop of Reflections at Marina Bay while Zone 2 is located right beside the beach.
The night market runs from 5 pm to 10.30 pm. If you’re looking for something to do this CNY, you’ll be glad to know that they’re open throughout the CNY season but will be closed from 20 to 22 Jan.
With Ningxia Night Market here in Singapore, there is no need to fly to Taiwan to satisfy your night market cravings. However, this comes at a costly price. Some of the food items priced here are way beyond the usual Taiwan night market fare.
Here are some of the items that we believe will be worth your buck:
MUST GET: Beef Noodles by Chef Cheng Cheng Chung 正立牛肉面 ($10)
This is probably the highlight of the entire night market. Priced at $10, you get a flavourful bowl of soup with huge generous chunks of beef.
This deep flavour does not come easy – the broth is made after boiling the ingredients for 48 hours. We highly recommend that you attack this once you arrive.
WORTH: Fried Chicken Cutlet by Fun Sun G ($12)
Attracting long queues at the actual Ningxia Night Market, the fried chicken cutlet is one of the items that you should get. A classic Taiwan night market snack, the huge and tender piece of chicken breast is wrapped in a thin and crispy layer of batter. Best consumed while piping hot.
Both the chicken cutlet and beef noodles can be found at Stall 13, Zone 1.
CHEAPEST: Salted Egg Taro Balls (2 for $2)
This is the cheapest item here at the Asian Night Market. At $1 per ball, bite into these soft taro balls that burst in your mouth without breaking the wallet.
The stall also sells Sweet Potato Balls at 6pcs for $5.
You can find these budget-friendly taro balls at Stall 22, Zone 2.
SLIGHTLY EXPENSIVE: Taiwanese Sausage with Glutinous Rice 大肠包小肠 by Tsai Hsiao-hu 蔡小虎 ($10)
Taiwanese Sausage with Glutinous Rice is classic Taiwanese street food and is well-loved by many. The chewy glutinous rice is well balanced with the crisp texture of the cucumbers. The sausage is slightly springy in texture and had a slightly smoked flavour to it.
The Taiwanese Sausage is available for purchase separately at $8.
You can find this at Stall 19, Zone 2.
NOT BAD: Egg-bombed Scallion Pancake 月氏激蛋葱油饼 ($8)
If you’re a fan of Liang’s Sandwich which is endorsed Jay Chou, you’ll probably love the one offered here at Asian Night Market as well. An egg is cracked on top of stir-fried basil leaves and green onions which is then ‘bombed’ on top of a freshly deep-fried scallion pancake.
The pancake is glazed with a special sauce, sprinkled with some pepper and chilli powder before it is served.
You can find this at Stall 20, Zone 2.
Other Special Mentions
Oyster Mee Sua 蚵仔面线
Who can forget about Oyster Mee Sua when it comes to Taiwan food? Slurp on this bowl of mee sua that is paired with juicy oysters and bouncy braised pig intestines.
The Oyster Mee Sua and Oyster Omelette are available for purchase at Stall 6, Zone 1.
Deep-Fried Smelly Tofu 六浩店臭豆腐
Usually greeted by its smell first, the smelly tofu is also another classic Taiwanese street food. While the dish is not generally accepted by everyone, the Smelly Tofu served here at the Asian Night Market is not that smelly compared to the ones in Taiwan.
You can customize the level of spiciness to your preference just like how you order your Mala Xiang Guo.
This is available at Stall 3, Zone 1
