I Tried Making A Kimchi Burger Using Impossible Beef For The First Time

I’m sure everyone has heard of Impossible Meat. I’ve heard reviews of how it tastes similar to actual beef and I see it everywhere on menus, but I’ve never actually tasted it before.

So, when Cold Storage offered to send some over to us, I was thrilled but somewhat worried at the same time. Because… do I cook it like beef? I mean, it’s not beef, right?

The plan for the day was to make a burger, but I decided to give it a Korean twist by throwing in some stir-fried kimchi and do something like a Kimchi Burger.

Here are the ingredients I used for the Kimchi Burger.

Preparing the Patty

First of all, even without opening the packaging, it looks creepily similar to ground beef. After letting it thaw for a while, throw in a quarter of diced onions and season with salt and pepper. We’re using only half of the Impossible Beef, which is around 170g.

Not gonna lie, I kept doubting myself that this was made from plants. However, the texture threw me back a couple of times as it felt a little too sticky and slimy for real beef. Good thing is, it’s way easier to shape your patty using Impossible Beef.

Grilling the Patty

Before grilling the patty, I made sure to clear my doubts and it turns out, Impossible Beef can actually be eaten raw. This meant that I could cook my burger patty to medium/medium-rare and nothing bad would happen.

Onto the pan it went, and much like actual beef, you can see the bottom slowly turning brown.

I flipped the patty and to my surprise, it seared beautifully like an actual beef patty. Like, how is this made from plants?!

You can add a slice of cheese at this point, cover the pan and let it melt.

The Final Product

Tadah! I used mayonnaise but in hindsight, I should have mixed a bit of Gochujang with the mayo to really bring out the Korean flavours even more.

Visually, the burger looks amazing (self-praise lol). If you told me this was made using actual beef, I wouldn’t doubt you at all.

Texture-wise, the patty made using Impossible Beef had a strikingly similar resemblance to actual beef. However, it did lack a bit of flavour which you get from natural animal fat. But other than that, I can’t really think of anything bad.

For a plant-based burger, this was delicious.
