AhMah’s Legacy Cafe Review: Handmade Ang Ku Kueh In Upper Thomson With Flavours Like Pistachio

TLDR: AhMah’s Legacy Cafe is a Teochew kueh café that has moved from Thomson V Two to a bigger space at 22 Sin Ming Road, #01-252. Known for their freshly made ang ku kueh prepared the traditional way, standout flavours include the Pure Pistachio Ang Gu Kueh ($6), and the Bandung Matcha ($7). Ang gu kuehs range from $3.80 to $6, and drinks start from $3.

Handmade ang ku kueh is getting harder to find, and fewer young owners build a business around it. However, for founder Shiny Phua, AhMah’s Legacy is a tribute to her late grandmother. From its tiny basement unit in Thomson V Two, it has now moved into a bigger café space in a Sin Ming HDB block.

The menu centres on sweet potato Ang gu kueh (the brand’s spelling of Ang ku kueh) in both classic and modern flavours, from salted mung bean to pistachio! The café also adds kueh-inspired drinks, including the Salat Awan, a drink take on kueh salat, and even a Bandung Matcha.

What Is AhMah’s Legacy?

AhMah’s Legacy is a Teochew kueh café at 22 Sin Ming Road that makes handmade Ang gu kueh, hand-pounded muah chee, Teochew glutinous rice and drinks inspired by local kueh. Every kueh is made from scratch with natural ingredients, no food colouring, preservatives, additives or artificial flavourings.

The brand was founded by Shiny Phua, who started it at 22 as a weekend side hustle based on her grandmother’s kueh.

The idea began as her final-year thesis on the declining appreciation for heritage food and her first shop was a small unit in Thomson V Two.

The Ang ku kueh skins are made with sweet potato, vegetables and glutinous rice flour, with their colours naturally derived from ingredients such as beetroot and butterfly pea. Many are still shaped using her grandmother’s wooden mould, a treasured tool that is more than 30 years old.

The café is styled like an olden-day coffee shop, with old-school decor. The dim lighting and air-conditioning give it a nice, unique vibe, making it a comfortable spot to dine in.

What We Ate

Pure Pistachio Ang Gu Kueh ($6)

Our favourite on the menu! The skin, made from sweet potato, pandan and butterfly pea, held a pumpkin seed butter and toasted pistachio filling that had a deliciously nutty and roasted flavour.

Since the pistachio isn’t paired with chocolate like the usual Dubai Kunafa combination one might expect, it was not as heavy. It had a nice crunch, with the right balance of sweet and saltiness.

If you try one dish, make it this one.

Taro Milk Ang Gu Kueh ($4)

This flavour was surprising. The taro and condensed milk flavours did not overpower each other and were not too sweet, which we appreciated!

Spiced Lotus Biscoff Ang Gu Kueh ($4.50)

The Lotus Biscoff was one of the heavier ang ku kueh, with a sweet, cinnamon-spiced filling. The crunchy Biscoff bits added texture, balancing the sweetness with a comforting, warm twist of the spices.

Black Sesame Praline with Almonds Ang Gu Kueh ($4.50)

Another standout! The black sesame praline and toasted almonds tasted like roasted sesame tang yuan filling without being overly sweet.

Peanut and White Sesame Muah Chee ($5.50)

The muah chee was a flavour bomb, with incredibly soft, chewy mochi coated in peanuts. The shallot oil that was used added a savoury depth that complemented the nuttiness well, making every bite delicious!

AhMah Teochew Glutinous Rice ($8.50)

The rice was fragrant and savoury from the shiitake mushrooms and dried shrimp, topped with fried shallots and spring onions. Aside from the Ang gu gueh, this is a must-try!

It would be even better with chilli, which you can request for on the side.

The Drinks We Tried

Bandung Matcha ($7)

The matcha was well balanced and not overly bitter, balanced by the sweetness and rosy notes of the bandung. It tasted like a sweet bandung with a matcha aftertaste, and we’d strongly recommend it!

Salat Awan ($8)

The Salat Awan is a dairy-free drink version of kueh salat. It tasted exactly like the real thing, with rich, pandan milk and soft blue pea rice, with natural flavours that was easy to enjoy.

Kuro Goma Latte ($6/7)

The Kuro Goma Latte is made with Japanese black sesame powder and has no added sugar. It was nutty but not heavy, making it a good pick for anyone looking for a less sugary drink.

Is AhMah’s Legacy Worth A Visit?

Yes, AhMah’s Legacy is definitely worth a visit! The flavours are well thought out and executed even better, and we’d go back just for the Kuehs. More than that, there are plenty of thoughtful touches around the shop too! You can leave Post-its sharing something your grandma used to say, or snap a photo with the communal film camera. These little details make the space feel warm and like being part of a small community.
