It was a sweltering day in Singapore and having a scoop of refreshing gelato immediately comes to mind. 99 Coffee and Gelato was our pitstop for the day – we’ve always wanted to check out this newly opened gelato cafe and it was relatively near town area, right beside Lavender MRT.
Gelato Cafe near Lavender MRT
Located on the third floor of Kitchener Complex, we’d never imagine this cafe to occupy the entire floor. We didn’t expect the space to look like this when we reached (judging from the photos circulating on social media).
The cafe offers coffee using Ethiopian beans, and other interesting tea selections such as Honey Orchid Dancong Hongcha, Naturally Farmed Kamairicha and Drifting Snowflake Jasmine Green.
Gelato flavour-wise, the options were pretty unique with flavours such as:
- Sorrel, Crème Fraiche & Yuzu Jelly
- Dulcey Chocolate, Whiskey & Seasalt
- Mango Tajin
- Ricotta & Lime Curd
- Tomato Strawberry
- Caramelised Banana with Cacao Nibs
We opted for a double scoop and went for the Ricotta & Lime Curd + Sorrel, Crème Fraiche & Yuzu Jelly flavours.
For those who don’t know what Sorrel is, it’s basically a small green plant that’s said to have a lemony tang. When paired with crème fraiche, the gelato has an earthy, yoghurt-ish flavour. However, when paired with their yuzu jelly, it becomes a refreshing and zesty bite.
The Ricotta & Lime Curd didn’t disappoint as well, with the lime cutting through the cheesy flavours, making this an addictive treat. Perfect for those who want something creamy but not too cloying.
The problem came when our Waffle with a scoop of Mango Tajin was served. While the waffle did have slightly crispy edges and was of an ideal thickness, the majority of the waffle was on the dry side and didn’t have much taste to it.
Perhaps something was wrong with the batter that day?
The scoop of Mango Tajin was not bad and reminded us of the dried mango slices you find in supermarkets.
Interesting Gelatos in Singapore
99 Coffee and Gelato impressed us with their gelato flavours, and we do think we’ll be back to try out the other flavours. Waffles-wise, we might just give it a miss.
