88 Chicken (팔팔치킨) Review: Unpretentious Korean Fried Chicken Restaurant in Potong Pasir

Authentic and good Korean food is no longer something difficult to find in Singapore with restaurants spread all over our little red dot. 88 Chicken is a relatively new Korean restaurant over at Potong Pasir that serves Korean fried chicken and a delicious army stew.

A Korean Chef Runs The Kitchen

88 Chicken is helmed by Mr Kim Yong Hwan and his wife Jiyi, and aims to serve up quality Korean food at affordable prices, while using fresh, authentic Korean ingredients and traditional recipes. Mr Kim briefly worked as a chef in a number of restaurants in Singapore before finally deciding to set out on his own.

The shop is located in Potong Pasir, over at The Venue Shoppes. Beside the Korean restaurant is a Dominos and further down there’s also a Taekwondo academy.

The Korean restaurant is not big in size and can hold up to 20 pax indoors. There are 2 tables right outside that can hold up to 5pax each.

88 Chicken Menu

As you can probably guess from its name, 88 Chicken sells mainly Korean fried chicken. There are 3 different ones you can choose from, Original, Yangnyeom and Soy.

Besides Korean fried chicken, they also have ala carte menu items like Kimchi Stew (S $13 L $25), Sundubu Stew (S $13 L $25), Samgyetang ($23) and Seafood/Kimchi pancakes ($18 – $23).

Original Fried Chicken

We ordered half a fried chicken ($17) which came with 7 pieces. Alternatively, if you find that bones are a hassle, you can opt for the Boneless Thighs ($18 for 8pcs) or Wings ($18 for 10pcs).

The plain one was crispy on the outside and juicy, tender on the inside. We loved how it didn’t have that heavy, oily feeling to it. The batter is on the thin side, which we appreciated as well.

It comes with a mustard dip and a soy sauce dip as well. They also have the cubed radishes and kimchi for side dishes.

Yangnyeom Chicken

On the other hand, we felt that the Yangnyeom Chicken fell short of our expectations (after having the fried original one). We expected the sauce to have had some sort of impact, but this was maybe not spicy enough for us. If you’re someone who cannot take spice, this would be a good Yangnyeom chicken for you.

Other than that, the chicken still managed to retain its crispiness after being tossed in the sauce which was truly well done.

Make sure to pair it with some ice-cold beer for a great Chimaek session.

Army Stew

While we do not usually order Army Stew in Korean restaurants, every single one of the tables had one pot of army stew which made us curious.

A chicken place but everyone is eating army stew instead? We had to try it.

We opted for a small size ($20) which ended up looking hefty for its price point. It came with a slice of cheese, two instant noodles, sausages, spam, mushrooms, and tofu slices.

It was a delicious bowl of army stew, with the flavours being balanced out nicely, not too sweet and not too salty but still very umami. If possible, we wanted to use the leftover soup to make some fried rice towards the end.

We could tell that they used good quality ingredients, even the tofu isn’t the usual silken tofu you get from supermarkets.

Korean Restaurant in Potong Pasir

With no extravagant décor and a simple space, 88 Chicken gives off a nice, neighbourhood Korean restaurant vibe serving delicious Korean food at an affordable price. The place is a great addition to the neighbourhood and might just be the next Oven & Fried Chicken in Potong Pasir.
